Prague's historic core is small, but its residential districts are where the city feels most liveable, and that is where aparthotels and serviced apartments in Prague come into their own. An apartment usually gives you more room than a typical hotel room in the centre. A kitchen makes sense in a city with good local shops, and the extra space suits families, groups and anyone staying for a week or longer.

The historic nucleus, with Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock, is the most convenient base for sightseeing on foot. Expect crowds by day; streets away from the main routes are calmer in the evening.
Stays in or near Old Town (Staré Město)
Malá Strana (Lesser Town) lies between the river and the castle, with streets climbing towards the castle and its churches. It is a short walk across the river to the Old Town.

Founded in the 14th century as an extension of the Old Town, the New Town centres on Wenceslas Square. The main railway station, terminus of the Airport Express bus, is close by, so it is a practical base for travel.
Stays in or near New Town (Nové Město)
Vinohrady is a residential district east of the centre with a more local character. It is a comfortable base for longer stays, with metro and tram connections into the centre.

Karlín, on the east bank just beyond the New Town, is one of the residential districts with a more local character than the historic core. Public transport links it quickly with the centre.
Stays in or near Karlín
Across the river bend to the north, Holešovice is known for contemporary galleries. It is further from the main sights but linked to the centre by public transport.

Václav Havel Airport is about 20 km north-west of the centre. Trolleybus 59 runs to Nádraží Veleslavín on metro line A, bus 100 runs to Zličín on line B, and the Airport Express (AE) goes to the main railway station. Night buses 907 and 910 serve the airport when the metro is closed.
Metro lines A, B and C run from about 05:00 until around midnight, with trams and buses covering the rest of the city and night trams after hours. The PID Lítačka app sells all public transport tickets, including short-term passes, and you can also pay by contactless card on board airport buses and other city vehicles. Comfortable shoes matter: almost all streets in the centre are cobbled.
Choose a base near a metro station or a tram line with a direct route to where you will spend most time; Vinohrady, Karlín and the New Town all work well. Buy tickets and passes in the Lítačka app rather than queuing at machines.
Children under 15 and adults aged 65 and over travel free on Prague public transport (with proof of age from 10 and from 65), which helps families on a longer stay. Visitors combining cities may also like Karlovy Vary for a few days.
Winters hover around freezing and summers reach the mid-20s Celsius. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant for walking, while summer weekends are the busiest in the Old Town.
The Prague Spring classical music festival opens every year on 12 May, the anniversary of Smetana's death. The Signal Festival brings light installations in October, and Christmas markets fill the main squares in December.
Prague is very walkable, though almost every street is cobbled, and the metro and tram network is simple to use. That means you can stay outside the busiest tourist streets without losing much time. If you are comparing formats, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out the differences.
