The riverside between Newcastle and Gateshead is known for its series of bridges, among them the Tyne Bridge of 1928 and the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. Getting around Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle International Airport is on the northern edge of the city, at Woolsington near Ponteland, and the Tyne and Wear Metro links it with Central Station. The Metro, run under the Nexus banner, has two lines: the Green Line runs from the airport through the city centre and Gateshead to Sunderland, while the Yellow Line loops through Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay. Central Station is on the East Coast Main Line, with services operated by LNER and Lumo, and it is a stop on both Metro lines.

Buses are run mainly by Arriva, Go North East and Stagecoach, with Nexus coordinating the network and there are two bus stations in the city centre. In the middle of the city you will rarely need transport at all, since the Quayside, Grainger Town, the university campuses and the Gateshead riverside are all walkable. The city also has cycle lanes and lock-up points.

Living in Newcastle upon Tyne for longer

Northumberland Street is the pedestrianised main shopping street, and Grainger Town has an indoor market. Chinatown runs along Stowell Street, with Chinese, Korean and Japanese food shops and restaurants. Coin-operated laundrettes are listed on Fenham Road in the west of the city and on Heaton Road in the east.

The student suburbs, including Jesmond, Gosforth, Heaton and Shieldfield, give a settled residential feel beyond the centre and the Metro serves several of them. The Town Moor, a large green space just north of the city centre, and Jesmond Dene offer room to walk or run.

When to visit Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle has an oceanic climate and, sheltered in the rain shadow of the North Pennines, is among the driest cities in the UK, although rain can fall at any time. Rainfall varies less through the year than in the wetter west of the country, and winters can be cool to cold.

Events cluster in summer and early autumn. The Hoppings travelling fair takes over the Town Moor every June, Northern Pride is held on the Town Moor in July, and the Great North Run half marathon starts in Newcastle in September and finishes at South Shields.

The centre is compact: walking is the first choice for the city centre, the main university campuses, the Quayside and the Gateshead bank of the river opposite. For anything further out, the Tyne and Wear Metro and the bus network fill the gaps.
