Where to stay in Dresden

Altstadt and Frauenkirche

  • first-time visitors
  • sightseeing
  • museums

The Innere Altstadt is the historic core on the left bank. Wikipedia names the Frauenkirche at the Neumarkt, the Zwinger, the Semperoper and Dresden Castle among the landmarks, and Wikivoyage says the Old Town is quite compact despite its many attractions and museums, so most of it is accessible on foot. It is the most convenient base for a short visit.

Wikivoyage describes the Äußere Neustadt as a district with a lot of bars and restaurants, generally known for students, artists and "alternative" residents, and says that in general use "Neustadt" refers to this area. Wikipedia says the Bunte Republik Neustadt culture festival is held there each June. It suits visitors who want evenings out beyond the Altstadt.

Blasewitz

  • quiet stays
  • architecture
  • families

Wikivoyage says Blasewitz is architecturally the most interesting residential neighbourhood, with many Gründerzeit buildings from before the 1871 founding of the German Empire. It offers a residential base away from the Altstadt.

Loschwitz

  • views
  • quiet stays
  • walking

Wikivoyage lists Loschwitz and Weißer Hirsch in the eastern part of the right bank as the city's most exclusive residential areas. The Dresden transport company DVB operates two cable car systems up Loschwitz hill, according to Wikivoyage.

Getting around Dresden

Wikivoyage says the fastest connection from Dresden Airport, which is in the Klotzsche borough, is the S-Bahn: 12 minutes to Dresden Neustadt and 20 minutes to the main station, with trains every 30 minutes. Leipzig/Halle Airport has a direct railway connection to Dresden Hauptbahnhof, with trains taking less than 90 minutes from the airport, according to Wikivoyage.

Wikivoyage describes Dresden's public transport as extensive, reliable and high quality, consisting of the S-Bahn, trams and buses, with three Elbe ferries and two cable cars. The Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) operates the system as part of the Oberelbe Transport Network (VVO), whose tickets are valid on buses, trams and regional trains within a zone. Most lines run at night with different routes, and almost all trams meet at Postplatz, an arrangement Wikivoyage calls the Postplatztreffen. The city has 14 tram lines, according to Wikivoyage.

Living in Dresden for longer

Wikivoyage says the city centre is not the geographical midpoint of the city, so the outer districts need a bike or public transport. Most tram lines go well into the suburbs. The Äußere Neustadt is the district Wikivoyage associates with bars, restaurants and students.

The Dresden Elbland tourism site lists vineyards along the Elbe, and Wikivoyage mentions Radebeul, known for its wine, as a nearby town, which makes for easy days out. If you are relocating, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers how the format compares with a lease.

When to visit Dresden

Wikipedia says Dresden has an oceanic climate with continental influences. July averages 19.0 °C and January 0.1 °C, with February, March and April the driest months and July and August the wettest. The Elbe valley is warmer than the higher areas, and the weather station at Klotzsche is 1 to 3 °C colder than the inner city.

The Striezelmarkt Christmas market runs from the end of November until 24 December, according to Wikivoyage, and Wikipedia calls it one of the largest in Germany. Wikivoyage warns that traffic gets heavier, especially on weekends, while the Bunte Republik Neustadt festival takes place each June.

Wikivoyage describes Dresden as oriented around the Elbe, with the interesting districts being the Altstadt on the left bank and the Neustadt on the right, directly opposite. The city is larger by area than Munich, it adds, but much of it is of little interest to most tourists. For other cities nearby, see Leipzig and Berlin.
