Where to stay in Leipzig

Zentrum and Augustusplatz

  • first-time visitors
  • business travel
  • transport links

The historic core around the Markt and Augustusplatz holds markets, churches, shopping passages and museums, according to Wikivoyage. The Hauptbahnhof sits at the northeastern section of the inner city ring road, so most arrivals by rail are within walking distance of the centre. It is the most convenient base for a short stay.

Waldstraßenviertel

  • quiet stays
  • architecture
  • long stays

Northwest of the centre, the Waldstraßenviertel is described by Wikivoyage as Europe's largest uninterrupted Gründerzeit district, with 19th-century residential streets. It feels residential rather than touristy, yet the centre is close. A good choice if you want calmer evenings on a longer stay.

Plagwitz

  • creative scene
  • long stays
  • walking

Plagwitz lies about 3 km west of the city centre. Its former factories have been turned into lofts, galleries and cultural spaces since the 1990s, including the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, and the Karl-Heine Canal has recreational paths. Expect a younger, creative neighbourhood feel with a tram link to the centre.

Südvorstadt and Connewitz

  • nightlife
  • local life

South of the centre, Südvorstadt and Connewitz are student and alternative quarters, and Südvorstadt in particular is gentrifying and has gained the nickname 'Hypezig'. It suits visitors who want cafés and a lived-in neighbourhood rather than the historic core.

Getting around Leipzig

Leipzig/Halle Airport is about 22 km northwest of the city centre and has a rail connection on the S-Bahn. Wikivoyage gives the journey to the city as roughly 14 to 18 minutes with trains every 30 minutes; check the timetable for your travel day. The Hauptbahnhof is a major long-distance hub with ICE, IC and regional express services to cities including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Dresden, according to Wikipedia.

Within the city, the MDV transport association covers buses and the S-Bahn, and trams and buses are run by LVB, per Wikivoyage. The S-Bahn runs through the City Tunnel, which opened in December 2013 and links the Hauptbahnhof with the Markt station. MDV lists 24-hour cards, single tickets and the Deutschlandticket, and has the MOOVME app for digital ticketing. The tourist board promotes the Leipzig Card as including public transport and discounts at sights and restaurants.

Living in Leipzig for longer

For a longer stay, Plagwitz, Südvorstadt and the Waldstraßenviertel are the districts that read as neighbourhoods rather than visitor areas, and all are served by tram. Choose by the lifestyle you prefer: creative and canal-side in Plagwitz, cafés in Südvorstadt, quiet residential streets in the Waldstraßenviertel.

The Hauptbahnhof functions as a large shopping centre, which is handy for last-minute errands on arrival or departure. Anyone planning a relocation can read our notes on serviced apartments for relocation.

When to visit Leipzig

Wikivoyage gives average temperatures from about -2 to 4 °C in January and 14 to 25 °C in July. Wikipedia describes an oceanic climate with continental influences, with far more sunshine in July than in December.

Wikivoyage lists the Leipzig Book Fair in March, a model, hobby and games fair in late September or early October, and a tourism and caravanning fair in November. Check the official calendars before booking, as fair weeks can affect demand.

The Leipzig Trade Fair dates back to 1190, and the city has long musical associations: Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn both worked here. Leipzig has grown quickly since the 2000s, and its districts differ a lot in feel, so the area you choose matters. Other German cities in our listings include Dresden and Berlin.
