Genting Highlands is a hill resort on the peak of Mount Ulu Kali in the Titiwangsa Mountains, roughly an hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit its mix of visitors: families spending several days across the theme parks and indoor attractions, groups travelling together, and guests on longer stays who want a kitchen after days in a complex of connected walkways. The resort straddles the border between Pahang and Selangor at about 1,800 metres above sea level.

Resort summit and SkyAvenue

  • theme parks
  • first-time visitors

The summit is where the main attractions are: Genting SkyWorlds, a 26-acre outdoor theme park that opened in 2022, the Skytropolis indoor theme park, the SkyAvenue lifestyle mall and the 5,132-seat Arena of Stars. Wikivoyage notes there are no streets, only walkways, tunnels and escalators connecting the buildings, so you rarely need to go outside except for the outdoor park.

Express buses from Kuala Lumpur stop here, and the car park next to the terminal can be used for park and ride.

Gohtong Jaya is the mid-hill town at roughly 1,000 metres, below the peak complex. Wikivoyage lists a Hindu temple, the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms with their lavender and hydrangea gardens, and the memorial park of the resort's founder. It is also the lower station of the older Genting SkyWay gondola.

Getting around Genting Highlands

The usual route is from Kuala Lumpur. Express buses run to the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets Terminal at Sky Sentral from KL Sentral and Terminal Bersepadu Gombak, according to the resort operator, and there are also AeroBus services between the terminal and KLIA and KLIA2. Wikivoyage says buses take about one hour, adding that booking in advance is advisable as services can sell out, especially at weekends. By car, the route branches off the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway at Genting Sempah onto Jalan Genting Highlands, which Wikipedia says is a private road with an entry charge at gantries.

From Sky Sentral, the Awana SkyWay gondola takes about 10 minutes to the Genting Highlands Station at SkyAvenue and runs from 7 am to 11 pm. The same ticket includes a free stop at Chin Swee Station for the Chin Swee Caves Temple. The operator says tickets can be bought in advance and are valid for 30 days, and that there is a luggage storage service at Sky Sentral open 24 hours. Standard and glass-floor gondolas are available. The operator posts scheduled maintenance closures for its cable cars on its website, so check before you travel.

Living in Genting Highlands for longer

The hill is a self-contained resort, so daily life is organised around the complex. Wikipedia lists SkyAvenue, First World Plaza and the Genting Grand Complex as shopping and entertainment areas, with the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets at mid-hill. Wikipedia says free shuttle buses run between Awana, Gohtong Sentral and Sky Sentral and between hilltop hotel lobbies, and Wikivoyage reports that taxi stands and ride-hailing are available.

Beyond the summit complex, Wikivoyage lists the Chin Swee Caves Temple, reached by the Awana SkyWay, and in Gohtong Jaya a Hindu temple and a strawberry farm. See our relocation guide if you plan to stay for weeks, and aparthotel vs hotel for how the options compare.

When to visit Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands has a subtropical highland climate with cool temperatures and frequent mountain mists. Wikipedia gives typical temperatures between 14 °C and 22 °C, rarely above 25 °C or below 10 °C. Wikivoyage says temperatures are about 10 °C lower than in Kuala Lumpur and that hotel rooms are unheated and can get chilly at night.

On a clear day there are views down into the valley, but when it is raining in Kuala Lumpur the highlands can be wrapped in cloud and visibility drops. Thanks to the connected walkways, much of the resort can be explored without going outdoors.

The area was established in 1965 by Malaysian entrepreneur Lim Goh Tong and opened to the public in 1971. Today it is built around Resorts World Genting, an integrated resort with seven hotels and more than 10,000 rooms, indoor and outdoor theme parks, convention facilities, shops and restaurants.
