Where to stay in Johor Bahru

City centre and JB Sentral

  • rail and bus links
  • short stays
  • food

Wikipedia names JB Sentral as one of the city's two main bus terminals and as a KTM railway station with the Shuttle Tebrau service to Woodlands in Singapore, and Wikivoyage describes the southern part of the city as the main city centre, with old town areas including Chinatown, Little India and the Stulang Laut waterfront. Staying here puts the border crossing and the intercity connections within reach, which is why it is the practical choice for short trips and for people crossing frequently.

Stays in or near City centre and JB Sentral

Stulang Laut

  • waterfront
  • quiet evenings
  • longer stays

Wikivoyage lists the Stulang Laut waterfront among the old town areas of the southern city centre and describes it as lying close to and east of the Causeway, with views of the Johor Strait along the shoreline, restaurants and a seaside promenade popular with locals in the evening. Wikipedia says the Stulang Laut Ferry Terminal, with boat services to Batam and Bintan in Indonesia, is nearby.

Danga Bay

  • waterfront
  • families
  • leisure

Wikivoyage places Danga Bay in the west of the city, describes it as an integrated waterfront development, and lists the suburbs of Bandar Baru UDA, Tampoi and Kempas in the same part of the city. It says visitors can walk along the seaside, where there is a theme park, a convention centre, restaurants and a shopping mall. Wikipedia describes Danga Bay as a recreational waterfront area.

Mount Austin

  • shopping
  • families
  • long stays

Wikivoyage places Taman Mount Austin in the north of the city, reached by the trunk road Jalan Tebrau, with AEON Tebrau, IKEA Tebrau and Toppen Shopping Centre among the developments there, and warns that peak hour jams are relatively frequent on Jalan Tebrau. It is a suburban area with malls and everyday services close together, which suits people staying a month or more.

Getting around Johor Bahru

Senai International Airport is in Kulai, around 22 km north-west of the city centre according to Wikipedia; Wikivoyage describes it as being in the neighbouring town of Senai and says a taxi ride to the centre takes about 30 minutes. Wikipedia lists links to the PLUS Highway, the Senai-Desaru Expressway and the Second Link Expressway, taxis outside the airport, public and private buses to the city and a Causeway Link shuttle bus to JB Sentral. Airlines and routes change, so check schedules before booking.

The Johor-Singapore Causeway, which Wikipedia describes as a six-lane road with a single-track railway line to Woodlands, and the Second Link are the road crossings, and Wikivoyage says congestion can be expected towards Singapore during the morning rush hour. Wikipedia lists the Shuttle Tebrau train from JB Sentral to Woodlands Train Checkpoint as the current cross-border rail service. The RTS Link, which the Land Transport Authority of Singapore describes as a 4 km rail shuttle between Woodlands North station and Bukit Chagar station with a journey of about five minutes, was still under construction at the time of writing, and Wikipedia says it is slated to open in January 2027, so check its current status. Within the city, Wikipedia names JB Sentral and Larkin Sentral as the main bus terminals.

Living in Johor Bahru for longer

Wikivoyage describes Johor Bahru as having many shopping complexes, restaurants and cafes, and lists open-air night markets and bazaars alongside air-conditioned malls with supermarkets. Weekly night markets run along Jalan Seladang, according to Wikivoyage, and it also mentions Larkin Public Market. For a longer stay with a kitchen, malls and local markets give you both supermarket supplies and everyday eating options.

Choose your area by how often you will cross the border or commute. The centre and JB Sentral suit frequent crossings; Mount Austin suits shopping and family routines; Danga Bay suits a waterfront setting. Wikipedia describes the terrain as mostly flat with some hills, Wikivoyage says the city is not as dense as many other cities in the country, and it describes driving as generally the most convenient way to explore it.

When to visit Johor Bahru

Wikipedia describes an equatorial climate in Johor Bahru, with consistent temperatures, a considerable amount of rain and high humidity through the year, and annual rainfall of about 2,350 mm. Daily average temperatures range from 26.4 degrees Celsius in January to 27.8 degrees in April, so there is no cold season, and Wikipedia says there are two monsoon periods, the first between mid-October and January. The choice of month comes down to when you want to avoid rain and how you feel about heat and humidity.

Because the climate is steady, timing matters less than in a temperate city. Wikivoyage notes that congestion at the border checkpoints is particularly heavy during long weekends and extended public holidays, and that congestion towards Singapore is expected in the morning rush hour.

Wikipedia describes Johor Bahru as Malaysia's largest state capital by population, with 858,118 residents at the 2020 count, and as Zone A of Iskandar Malaysia, the country's largest special economic zone by investment value. The city is part of Malaysia and is a very different base from Kuala Lumpur: smaller, spread out, and organised around the Singapore border. The sections below cover where to stay, how the border links and airport work, and the climate.
