Kuala Lumpur is a city where many visitors stay for work or family reasons, and aparthotels and serviced apartments in Kuala Lumpur suit the way people use the city. Business travellers on multi-week projects, families visiting relatives and remote workers all benefit from a separate living room, a kitchen and laundry facilities, especially in a climate where you will want to change clothes more than once a day.

The area around the Petronas Twin Towers and the Suria shopping centre is the city's showpiece district. Offices, malls and park space sit together, and rail stations put the rest of the city within easy reach.

Bukit Bintang, at the heart of the Golden Triangle, is the shopping and entertainment hub, with large malls, bars and restaurants. It is a short walk or GO KL bus ride from KLCC.

The old centre around Petaling Street mixes colonial architecture with the traditional Chinese commercial quarter, full of shops and places to eat. It is fairly compact and one of the better parts of the city for exploring on foot.

KL Sentral is the main railway station and the city terminal for both airport trains, which makes it the easiest base for early flights. Neighbouring Brickfields is the city's Little India.

Bangsar is a popular restaurant and pub district with an upmarket residential feel. It is a comfortable choice for longer stays, a short distance from KL Sentral.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) serves both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 by rail. The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop to KL Sentral in about half an hour, with a few more minutes between the two terminals. The KLIA Transit uses the same line but calls at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya and Salak Tinggi, so it takes longer.
The LRT, MRT and Monorail lines cover the centre, and a Touch 'n Go card works across the whole network. GO KL runs free circular bus routes around the central business district. The old centre is compact and walkable, but many outer districts are hostile to pedestrians, so check the walking route from your apartment to the nearest station before you book.
Buy a Touch 'n Go card on arrival and keep it topped up; it removes the need for coins on every journey. Choose a base within a short, shaded walk of a station, because the heat makes long walks along main roads tiring.
Plan errands for the morning, as heavy afternoon downpours are common in the wetter months. If you are moving to the city for work, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation explains what to check in a longer let.
Kuala Lumpur is tropical, with temperatures above 30°C for most of the year. The wetter season runs roughly from October to March with heavy monsoon rain, while June and July are comparatively dry. Rain usually comes in short, intense bursts rather than all day.
Thaipusam, held on the first full moon of the Tamil month of Thai (it fell on 1 February in 2026), draws huge crowds to the Batu Caves just outside the city and is a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur.
The city is hot and humid all year, and its suburbs were largely built around the car, so where you stay shapes how easily you get about. Bases close to an LRT, MRT or Monorail station, or on the free GO KL bus routes, make daily life far simpler. Malaysia's other hubs, such as George Town and Melaka, combine well with a KL stay.
