Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Puerto del Carmen

26 stays · 16 aparthotels and 10 serviced apartments

Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote's main resort, a long seafront strip on the south coast with sandy beaches that Wikivoyage calls unusual on this volcanic island. It is a natural place for aparthotels and serviced apartments: a kitchen and a balcony or terrace suit families and anyone staying a week or more, and eating in on some evenings is easy when supermarkets and bars sit along the same road.

The Old Town Harbour is the historic core, described by Wikivoyage as whitewashed and low-rise. The settlement first appears on maps as Tiñosa in the sixteenth century and was renamed Puerto del Carmen in 1957. Wikivoyage says the whole front-water strip is lined with bars and restaurants, and the small Playa Chica beach lies about 500 m to the east.

Los Pocillos

Los Pocillos is at the eastern edge of town and is built around the broad Playa de los Pocillos, which Wikivoyage gives as about one kilometre long. It is further from the harbour, so a bus or taxi is the way to reach the Old Town, but it is also nearer to the airport.

Getting around Puerto del Carmen

The airport and Arrecife, the island capital, are a short drive east. Wikivoyage says bus 161 runs from the airport terminals every 30 minutes along the Puerto del Carmen hotel strip and continues to Puerto Calero, Yaiza and Playa Blanca (for the Fuerteventura ferry), bus 6 runs from Arrecife every 20 minutes along the strip to the harbour, and bus 3 runs from Costa Teguise every 20 minutes via Arrecife. The tourist board points visitors to the island's public transport network website for routes and timetables, so check it before relying on any of these frequencies.

Within the resort most people walk along Avenida de las Playas or use the bus. Wikivoyage warns that the land rises steeply inland, so anyone with limited mobility should check the gradient to their accommodation. It also notes that the coast path west to Puerto Calero is about 4 km and that you can return by bus. A Sunday bus, number 12, runs from the resort to Teguise for the weekly market according to the same source.

Living in Puerto del Carmen for longer

For longer stays, being near a stop on bus 3 or 161 is worth as much as being near the beach if you plan to explore the island, since both run along the strip. Wikivoyage lists a twice-weekly market at Puerto Calero, and the bars and restaurants along the front make a quick alternative to cooking.

Lanzarote is a small island, so a base here works for day trips by bus or car. See Spain for other destinations, or Tenerife and Mogán if you are comparing the Canary Islands. Our guide to aparthotels versus hotels explains the trade-offs for longer visits.

When to visit Puerto del Carmen

The Lanzarote tourist board describes a warm climate all year, with an average annual temperature of about 21 degrees Celsius, monthly averages from 17.4 in January to 25.2 in August, scarce rainfall and sea temperatures between 18 and 23 degrees. That makes it a year-round destination.

Wikivoyage says diving is possible all year, with water temperatures close to 20 degrees and visibility above 25 m, and Wikipedia gives a range of 19 to 23 degrees. The tourist board does not name a best season, so choose by how much heat you want.

The resort is long and thin, so the main decision is where along the strip you base yourself. Wikivoyage describes a resort strip of about 6 km running east from the harbour to the airport perimeter fence, while Wikipedia puts Avenida de las Playas at roughly 7 km. The areas below move from the old harbour in the west to the quieter eastern end. If you are new to the format, our guide explains what an aparthotel is.
