Getting around Vitoria-Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz station is a main stop on the Madrid to Hendaye line, with Alvia trains to Madrid and connections to Barcelona. Renfe services also run to León, Ourense, Miranda de Ebro, Irun, Zaragoza and San Sebastián. The coach station is in the north-west of the centre, at Euskaltzaindia Plaza, with connections to Bilbao, Burgos, Santander, Zaragoza, Pamplona and Madrid. It is not close to the railway station or to the city centre.

Vitoria Airport is about 8 km north of the town and has a few destinations, mainly domestic; a shuttle bus runs to the centre. Bilbao Airport is 70 km away and has more connections. Euskotren runs the city tram on two lines from Angulema Street in the centre to the northern districts of Abetxuko and Ibaiondo, and tickets are sold from machines at the stops. City buses are run by TUVISA, and walking is practical in such a small city.

Living in Vitoria-Gasteiz for longer

Spanish is the main language, though knowledge of Basque is common and English is not widely spoken. Traditional small shops line Calle Dato in the centre, and Basque cuisine is a draw in the bars around the old town, where tapas are usually taken with a few small drinks.

The city's newer neighbourhoods, Lakua, Salburua and Zabalgana, were laid out in a development plan favouring parks and open space. The Salburua wetlands on the eastern edge of the city form a nature park.

Vitoria-Gasteiz has an oceanic climate. Winters are much cooler than in lowland coastal areas, summers have highs similar to the coast with cool nights because of the elevation, and the climate is humid year-round with low sunshine by Spanish standards.

The festival calendar runs from spring to summer: San Prudencio is marked in April, the Azkena Rock Festival takes place in June, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival is held in July, and the Fiestas de la Virgen Blanca, in honour of the patron saint, are celebrated in August.

The old town has some of the best preserved medieval streets and plazas in the region, and Vitoria-Gasteiz is one of very few cities with two cathedrals. It was named European Green Capital in 2012, with the city's green policies ensuring that the whole population lives within 300 metres of an open green space.
