Choeng Thale, also written Cherngtalay, is the subdistrict on Phuket's north-west coast that takes in Bang Tao and the beaches around it, and aparthotels and serviced apartments in Choeng Thale are a natural fit for the way people use this stretch of coast. A kitchen and a separate living area make a week or a month by the sea easier than a hotel room, families gain extra space and a place to prepare meals, and remote workers can settle into a routine away from the busier resorts further south. If the format is new to you, our guide explains what an aparthotel is.

Wikivoyage says Bang Thao is a large open bay with the second of Phuket's longest beaches at 7 km, with a smaller, almost completely enclosed bay at its northern end and fine coral at the mouth of that bay. It adds that dry season swimming is excellent, that accommodation is available outside the Laguna complex at the bay's south end, and that places to eat and tourist facilities are found at Laguna or in the nearby town of Cheong Thale. Its Phuket guide calls Bang Thao a long, very quiet beach.

Wikivoyage describes the Laguna complex, which occupies most of Bang Thao bay, as a five-hotel development with a golf course, and says getting around it is free, with shuttle buses between the hotels and the shopping centre and a ferry service around the lagoon. It lists a shopping village and a large number of restaurants in the complex, and notes that leaving it for other places on Phuket can be expensive because few Phuket taxis travel to it. It is the easiest base for guests who want most things within one landscaped area.

Wikivoyage places Surin Beach about 15 minutes on foot south of Bang Thao beach, so the two can be combined in a single stay, and says it is about 20 minutes from Phuket airport. It describes Surin as one of the quieter beaches on the island, with clear water, white sand, casuarina trees and small Thai-style restaurants, though it notes that larger housing and hotel developments are gradually changing the village atmosphere. The Surin Beach coordinates fall within Choeng Thale sub-district.

Layan Beach lies in Choeng Thale sub-district, north of Bang Tao, on the same stretch of Phuket's north-west coast. Wikipedia places Sirinat National Park, established in 1981, on the northwest coast of the island, and Wikivoyage's Phuket guide lists Nai Thon and Nai Yang, two quiet beaches in the park, so a stay on this side of the island is also a base for the quieter beaches further north.
Wikivoyage says the airport is about 25 minutes from Bang Thao, and its Phuket guide lists the airport options as an air-conditioned municipal bus to Phuket Town, minibuses, metered taxis from the official stand outside the terminal, and ride-hailing through Grab or Bolt. Its guide also says the Phuket Smart Bus connects the airport with Rawai Beach and points in between along the west coast, and the Phuket Smart Bus website lists routes with Patong, Karon and Rawai, so check its timetable page to see whether a route fits your plan before relying on it for Choeng Thale.
Distances in this part of Phuket are too long to walk, apart from the stretch between Bang Thao and Surin beaches that Wikivoyage puts at about 15 minutes on foot. For other trips, taxis, ride-hailing and hired vehicles are the usual choices, and Wikivoyage's Phuket guide lists bike and car rental locations around the island. Wikivoyage says Patong, the island's main nightlife area, is around 20 minutes from Bang Thao by taxi, so evenings out are a short ride rather than a short walk.
Wikivoyage says there is no nightlife at Bang Thao to compare with Patong, so a stay here suits people who want quiet evenings and a settled routine. It describes a large number of restaurants and shops in the Laguna complex, some cheaper hawker-style restaurants on the beach, and tourist facilities in the nearby town of Cheong Thale. A kitchen lets you mix eating out with cooking at home.
Because the area is spread out, think about how you will make everyday trips before you choose between Bang Tao, Surin and Layan. Wikipedia lists Choeng Thale as a sub-district of Thalang district, in the northern part of Phuket, and Wikivoyage's Phuket guide notes that bike rental is offered in almost every quarter of the island and that taxis and ride-hailing are available.
Wikipedia describes a tropical monsoon climate for Phuket, with a dry season from December to March and a wet season over the remaining eight months, and about 2,200 mm of rain a year. Wikivoyage's Phuket guide says the island is hot and humid throughout the year, with May to October a summer monsoon season in which mornings and afternoons are sunny and clear but it tends to rain in the evenings, and November to February considered the cool season.
Wikivoyage's Bang Thao article says dry season swimming is excellent, and its Phuket guide says that diving is best from mid-October to May, so beach-focused stays work best then. Outside those months, a stay with a kitchen and a living area gives you more room on days when the weather turns.
Wikivoyage describes Bang Thao as being on the northwest side of Phuket, with a beach about 7 km long that it ranks as the second longest on the island. Wikipedia lists Choeng Thale as one of the six sub-districts of Thalang district, in the north of the island. It lies in Thailand, and for livelier evenings you may want to compare it with Patong Beach before choosing a base.
