  • nightlife
  • beach
  • first-time visitors

Wikipedia gives the beach a length of 2,850 metres, and Wikivoyage describes it as Phuket's most developed beach, centred on daytime water sports and evening nightlife. Bangla Road is the entertainment street behind it, lined with bars and nightclubs. Staying here puts you in the middle of the action, so check how each listing handles evening noise.

  • everyday errands

Wikivoyage describes Jungceylon as a modern air-conditioned shopping mall, and describes Patong Beach turning into a large night bazaar each evening along the main roads. The area is a practical base for groceries, pharmacies and everyday errands as well as shopping, and Wikivoyage places the mall behind the beach roads, on the bypass road.

Nanai Road

  • long stays
  • local feel
  • quieter evenings

Wikivoyage describes Nanai Road as the residential expatriate area, running about half a kilometre inland from Beach Road. It is set back from the beach, so it suits long stays and guests who prefer a calmer base, with the beach and Bangla Road a short ride or walk away.

Kalim

  • quiet
  • rocky coast
  • couples

Wikivoyage describes Kalim as a series of small, rocky but quiet beaches just north of Patong. It is a separate bay from the main beach, so allow for a short trip when you want shops or nightlife.

Getting around Patong

Wikivoyage's Patong guide puts Phuket International Airport 35 km north of Patong. Phuket Smart Bus operates a route connecting the airport with Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai, run by Phuket City Development Co., Ltd. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are the other usual choices.

Within Patong, Wikivoyage says the town can just about be covered on foot and lists songthaew-style taxis, metered taxis and motorbike taxis. The Smart Bus also connects Patong with Karon, Kata and Rawai on the west coast, which helps if you want to see other beaches.

Living in Patong for longer

For longer stays, Wikivoyage names Jungceylon for shopping and the Baanzan (Banzaan) market for fresh fish and vegetables, and says a night bazaar fills the main roads in the evening. Nanai Road, which Wikivoyage describes as the residential expatriate area, is the one to consider if you want somewhere calmer than the beachfront.

Apartments with a kitchen let you cook with market ingredients. If you plan to stay through the monsoon months, ask each property about air-conditioning, laundry and the strength of the Wi-Fi, since these matter more over weeks than days.

When to visit Patong

Wikivoyage's Phuket guide calls November to February the cool season, with temperatures of about 25 to 33 degrees Celsius, followed by a hot season from March to early May. It describes May to October as the monsoon period, with sunny mornings and afternoons but rain in the evenings.

The same guide says water clarity goes down during the monsoon months and that surfing is possible off the western beaches, while Wikivoyage's Patong guide describes the Kalim beaches north of the town as rocky but quiet.

Patong is on Phuket's west coast and, according to Wikipedia, is the island's main tourist resort. Wikivoyage calls it the largest beach resort on Phuket and a party capital of Asia, with the beach and evening entertainment concentrated in the middle of town. The choice is between the busy beach and Bangla Road core, the shopping area around Jungceylon, the more residential streets inland and the quieter rocky bay at Kalim.
