Where to go, month by month
Warm places to visit in February: nine picks, days and nights compared
Facts checked against the cited sources on
If you are looking for warmth in February, the useful question is how warm it is by day, how cool it gets at night, and how much rain to expect. This page answers it for nine places using published monthly averages, and it keeps the differences visible instead of calling everything sunny.
It is our selection, not a ranking. The rule we used is described below, and the comparison table near the end puts the nine places side by side. For events and cold-weather ideas, see best places to travel in February; for the previous month, warm places to visit in January.
How we chose: days, nights and rain
We kept destinations whose February mean daily maximum is roughly 20 C or higher in a published table, then deliberately included a mix of dry, mild and wet-but-hot options. A 20 C day is comfortable for walking and sitting outside in sun even if it is not swimming-pool weather, so the mildest picks are flagged as such.
The figures come from AEMET (Spain), the Japan Meteorological Agency, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) normals files published by NOAA, the WMO World Weather Information Service, and an encyclopaedia climate table that credits the Bureau of Meteorology, all named in the sources. Southern-hemisphere logic matters here: February is late summer south of the equator, which is why northern Queensland appears, and midwinter in Europe, which is why the Canary Islands do.
Fuerteventura, Canary Islands: mild, with little rain
AEMET's 1981 to 2010 normals for Fuerteventura airport at Puerto del Rosario give a February mean daily maximum of 21.0 C, a mean minimum of 14.8 C and 16 mm of rain. That is a mild, dry winter climate rather than a hot one.
The table says nothing about wind or sea temperature, so check forecasts. Stays across Spain are gathered on the Spain page.
Lanzarote, Canary Islands: similar numbers, different landscape
The AEMET normals for Lanzarote airport list a February mean daily maximum of 21.3 C and a minimum of 14.3 C, with 18 mm of rain. The numbers are close to Fuerteventura's, so the decision rests on the island rather than the weather.
Both islands are well inside the same mild band, and both are cooler at night than the tropical picks below. See Puerto del Carmen for stays on Lanzarote.
Dubai: sunshine by day, a cool evening
The WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Dubai International Airport, published by NOAA, give a February mean daily maximum of 26.1 C and a mean minimum of 16.4 C, with 9.9 mm of rain. It is warmer by day than the Canary Islands and still has a noticeable chill after dark.
The trade-off is the opposite of the summer one: outdoor plans are easy, but the evening drop means you will want a layer. See Dubai.
Hurghada, Egypt: warm days, cool nights, almost no rain
NOAA's WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Hurghada airport give a February mean daily maximum of 23.5 C and a mean minimum of 12.4 C, with 0.5 mm of rain. It is the driest place on this page.
The 11-degree swing between day and night is the main thing to plan around, and the table does not cover sea temperature. Check your own government's travel advice for Egypt before booking. See Hurghada.
Naha, Okinawa, Japan: gentle warmth with regular rain
The Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 normals for Naha give a February mean daily maximum of 20.2 C, a minimum of 15.1 C and 114.5 mm of precipitation. It has the lowest daytime high on this page, and its 114.5 mm of precipitation is the third most on this page, after Cairns and Mauritius.
That makes Okinawa better for sightseeing and cultural visits than for a dependable beach holiday, and it is a different proposition from Japan's mainland winter. See Naha.
Phuket, Thailand: the hottest and one of the driest
NOAA's file of World Meteorological Organization 1991 to 2020 normals for Phuket lists a February mean daily maximum of 34.0 C, a minimum of 25.4 C and 24.0 mm of rain. It is the warmest February daytime figure here.
The trade-off is heat in the middle of the day; plan beach time for morning and late afternoon. Other Thai destinations are on the Thailand page.
Colombo, Sri Lanka: uniformly warm
NOAA's WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Colombo give a February mean daily maximum of 31.6 C and a minimum of 23.6 C, with 77.4 mm of rain. The difference between day and night is only about eight degrees, so evenings stay warm.
Rain is moderate, not negligible, and the table describes the capital, not the whole island. Check forecasts for each area you plan to visit. Stays are listed on the Sri Lanka page.
Mauritius: warm and humid, with a cyclone window
The WMO World Weather Information Service lists, for Port Louis, a February mean daily maximum of 31.4 C and a minimum of 24.0 C, with 160 mm of rain and about ten days of at least 1 mm; the service states the rainfall period as 1971 to 2000, so it is older than most other figures here. Mauritius Meteorological Services defines its summer as November to April.
February falls in the window that the encyclopaedia entry on Mauritian geography gives for occasional tropical cyclones, January to March, each said to disrupt the weather for about three days. The entry cites the national weather service, but we could not confirm the statement on that agency's own page. Flexible bookings and insurance are worth considering. See the Mauritius page.
Cairns, Queensland: hot, humid and the rainiest here
Bureau of Meteorology 1991 to 2020 figures for Cairns Aero, as reproduced in an encyclopaedia table, list a February mean daily maximum of 31.5 C and a minimum of 24.1 C, with 475.5 mm of rain. That is almost three times the rain of the next wettest pick, Mauritius.
February is late summer in Queensland, so it is warm, but anyone choosing it should expect heavy rain as part of the season and check Bureau of Meteorology forecasts and warnings. See Cairns.
February figures side by side, and what the list leaves out
The table gathers the numbers above. The last column is the gap between day and night, which we calculated from the published maximum and minimum.
Limits: each row is one station, periods differ between sources, and the tables do not cover sea temperature, wind, humidity or sunshine hours. Averages are not forecasts, and storms and rain can vary a great deal around the mean. Rules on entry and health requirements differ by nationality and change, so use each government's official pages; we give no entry advice. On a stay of a week or more, the guide to cooking in an aparthotel kitchen explains what to expect, and the country table below shows our listings.
| Place (station) | Mean max C | Mean min C | Rain mm | Day-night gap C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fuerteventura (airport) | 21.0 | 14.8 | 16 | 6.2 |

Frequently asked questions
Which place is warmest in February on this list?
Phuket has the highest published February mean daily maximum on this page, at 34.0 C, followed by Colombo at 31.6 C and Cairns at 31.5 C. Day and night temperatures differ, so look at both.
Where is warm and dry in February?
Hurghada has the lowest February rainfall in the sources used here at 0.5 mm, with Dubai at 9.9 mm, the Canary Islands stations at 16 to 18 mm and Phuket at 24.0 mm.
Is February a good month for Mauritius?
It is warm, with a Port Louis average maximum of 31.4 C, but an encyclopaedia entry on Mauritius says occasional tropical cyclones generally occur between January and March. Flexible bookings and checking the national weather service forecast are sensible.
Are the Canary Islands warm enough for the beach in February?
AEMET's normals give daytime highs of about 21 C in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. That suits sunbathing on a calm day, but we found no sea temperature figures, so check a marine forecast.
Why does Cairns have so much rain in February?
February is late summer in Queensland, and the Bureau of Meteorology figures reproduced in the table show 475.5 mm of rain for the month. This list includes it to show that warm and wet can go together.
