Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Avignon work well for a compact walled city that people use as a base for Provence. A kitchenette and a separate living space help families and groups, and they suit longer stays for business travellers or visitors spending a week or more exploring the region by train and bike.

The area around the Papal Palace is the heart of the walled city. Wikivoyage calls the Papal Palace the world's largest Gothic building, and says the old city is not very big and can easily be explored on foot. It is the best choice for short stays focused on the sights, though streets inside the walls are narrow, so check access if you arrive with luggage.

Avignon Tourisme places the Gare Centre railway station near the tourist office and two minutes from the historic centre. It is the practical base if you are arriving by train, taking day trips by TER or working in the city.

Les Halles, the covered food market on Place Pie, is open every morning except Monday according to Wikivoyage, which makes this side of the centre useful for anyone cooking in an apartment. Rue des Teinturiers is nearby, so it suits guests who want shops, markets and cafés close by.

The Île de la Barthelasse lies in the Rhône opposite the walls; Wikivoyage lists it among places to cycle to, and Avignon Tourisme describes a free river shuttle from the Quai de la Ligne, near the Pont d'Avignon, to the island. It suits guests who prefer a calmer, more rural setting, so check each listing's connection to the centre.
Wikivoyage lists historic Villeneuve among places to cycle to from Avignon. Avignon Tourisme says the Vélopop bike-share network covers Avignon, Le Pontet and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, so you can cycle between the town and the walled city.
Avignon has two main railway stations. Avignon Tourisme describes Gare Centre as a 2-minute walk from the historic centre and Gare TGV as 6 km from the city centre. The two are linked by the TER Avignon TGV to Carpentras line, which Avignon Tourisme says takes just a few minutes. From the TGV station, Avignon Tourisme gives 2 hours 40 minutes to Paris and 1 hour to Lyon.
Avignon Provence Airport is 8 km away but has no scheduled flights, according to Avignon Tourisme, which names Marseille, Nîmes and Montpellier as nearer alternatives. Within the city, Orizo runs the buses and tram with unified ticketing, and Vélopop offers 300 electric self-service bikes at 29 stations across Avignon, Le Pontet and Villeneuve-lez-Avignon. The city says it has almost 260 km of cycle paths.
For longer stays, Les Halles is the central food market, and Wikivoyage says the city's 14th-century walls enclose around 16,000 residents, so everyday services are close. A kitchen makes sense for a week or more in Avignon, and the cycle paths and Vélopop make errands and day trips straightforward.
Because the TGV and TER connections run through the city, a stay here suits remote workers and consultants who need regular trips to Paris, Lyon or Marseille. Leave a car at a car park and use the Orizo bus and tram, as Avignon Tourisme advises.
Wikipedia describes a hot-summer Mediterranean climate and says the prevailing wind is the mistral, which it says blows between 120 and 160 days a year. The Festival d'Avignon, the performing arts festival, takes place in July, so expect the city to be busier then and book early.
Outside July the city is calmer, and the walls, the market and the cycle paths are open to explore at your own pace. Wikivoyage describes the festival as lasting three or four weeks in July, with theatre across the city.
Avignon sits on the banks of the Rhône and has roughly 92,000 inhabitants, according to Wikivoyage, with around 16,000 of them living inside the historic ramparts. The walls are 4,330 metres long, according to Wikipedia, and the historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. Most of the sights and the market are within the walls, and the central railway station is just outside them.
