Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Bordeaux suit visitors who want a kitchen for market food, extra space for a family, or a base for a week or more of work and wine-region day trips. Bordeaux has around 268,000 residents according to Wikipedia, with about 1.4 million in the wider metropolitan area, and a waterfront and old town that earned UNESCO World Heritage status as the Port of the Moon in 2007.

The centre around Place des Quinconces, a central square listed by Wikivoyage, puts the Port of the Moon waterfront, Place de la Bourse and the Grand Théâtre within a walk. Wikivoyage lists the Cathédrale St-André and the CAPC contemporary art museum among the main sights. It is the easiest base for a first visit.

Chartrons developed as a district for foreign wine merchants, including English, Dutch and Irish traders, and has small, quiet streets near the quays. Rue Notre-Dame has antique shops, Les Halles des Chartrons is surrounded by restaurants, and a Sunday market runs on the quays with local producers. It suits longer stays.

Saint-Michel takes its name from the Basilique Saint-Michel, which Wikivoyage lists among the city's main churches. It lies south of the central squares, between the centre and Saint-Jean station, so it can suit visitors who want to be close to both.

The area around Gare Saint-Jean is the rail hub for the city, where TGV trains from Paris arrive. It suits travellers arriving by train who want to be close to the station.

La Bastide is on the opposite bank of the Garonne from the central quays, reached across bridges such as the Pont de Pierre, which Wikipedia lists among the city's landmarks. It is a possibility if you prefer to stay outside the central grid.
Bordeaux-Mérignac airport lies west of the city, in Mérignac. TBM (Transports Bordeaux Métropole) is the metropolitan transport network, and Wikipedia records that the tram has linked the airport with the city centre since 29 April 2023. Wikivoyage gives TGV journeys from Paris as just over two hours, and Wikipedia says the LGV Sud Europe Atlantique line, which opened in 2017, brings the journey to approximately two hours.
In the city, TBM operates the tram network, buses and the V3 bike-share system. Wikipedia describes a tram system that began operating in 2003, with ground-level power supply instead of overhead wires in the historic centre. The centre is best explored on foot, as Wikivoyage says, so choose a base near a tram stop if you are staying away from the river.
For a longer stay, Chartrons has everyday local life: a Sunday market on the quays, Les Halles des Chartrons and plenty of cafés. Wikivoyage lists Bordeaux's bike-share and tram network as the main alternatives to walking, which keeps outer districts workable.
The wine region is the draw for many longer visits, and the Cité du Vin, a museum dedicated to wine, opened in 2016. The relocation guide covers the wider practicalities of staying for weeks rather than days.
Bordeaux has an oceanic climate with cool winters and warm summers, shaped by Atlantic westerly winds. Wikipedia gives a winter average of 6.2 degrees Celsius and a summer average of 20.2 degrees.
Wine is part of the city's identity, and the Cité du Vin museum is dedicated to it. Event dates change by year and can affect availability, so check well ahead.
The compact centre follows the curve of the Garonne, and Wikivoyage notes that the riverfront stretches about 3 km and that most city sights are in this area. The sections below cover the districts worth comparing, how the tram and TGV connect, and the seasons. If you are deciding on a format, read aparthotel versus hotel, or look at other bases in France.
