Grenoble is regarded as the capital of the French Alps, a flat city ringed by the Vercors, Chartreuse and Belledonne mountains. Aparthotels and serviced apartments suit it well because so many stays here are long ones: researchers, engineers and students come for weeks or months, and families use the city as a base for the surrounding ski resorts and hiking, where a kitchen and extra space make a real difference.

The pedestrian heart of the old town around Place Grenette, close to the cathedral on Place Notre-Dame, the Musée de Grenoble and the museum of the former bishop's palace, which Wikivoyage lists as free to enter. Tram lines A and B serve the centre.

The old district on the right bank of the Isère, directly beneath the Bastille. It has the Archaeological Museum on Place Saint-Laurent and the Musée Dauphinois on the hillside, and giant stairways lead up towards the fortress. The Bastille cable car, known as Les Bulles, runs from the riverside nearby.

The science quarter north of the city centre, home to research institutes including the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility and the Institut Laue-Langevin, and to Minatec, a centre for innovation in micro- and nanotechnology. Grenoble has no large airport of its own. Alpes-Isère Airport is about 40 km north-west of the city and Wikivoyage describes a coach link taking around 35 minutes. Lyon Saint-Exupéry is about 100 km away with bus and train connections, and Geneva is about 157 km away. By rail, Wikivoyage lists TGV trains from Paris taking about three hours, hourly TER trains from Lyon Part-Dieu taking roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30, and TER services to Geneva and Valence.
The local network is run by M réso, which Wikivoyage lists under its older name, TAG. Wikipedia counts five tram lines and 26 bus routes, and the operator sells tickets from machines at stops, through a mobile app and at mobility offices. Wikivoyage says a single ticket is valid for one hour across tram and bus and must be validated on boarding. Regional buses to the ski stations leave from the bus station beside the railway station, and the Bastille cable car links the city with the fortress above.
Grenoble is one of the flattest cities in Europe, according to Wikivoyage, so cycling is easy, with routes along the Isère and Drac and dedicated lanes on main boulevards. Bicycles can be rented at the railway station and other Métrovélo offices.
Grenoble is a university and research city: Wikipedia counts more than 54,000 students in 2013, and research centres in or near the city include the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Institut Laue-Langevin and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. The main university campus is in Saint-Martin-d'Hères, so where you stay should follow where you work.
For daily life the compact centre has everything on foot, and the tourist office and Maison de la Montagne near the Hubert Dubedout tram stop sell hiking maps and give route advice for the three mountain ranges. M réso offers monthly and other subscriptions, and its Sur-Mesure subscription is aimed at occasional travellers. Wikivoyage also notes a car club, Alpes Autopartage, for longer stays when you need a car for the mountains.
Grenoble sits on a plain surrounded by mountains, which Wikivoyage says stop the wind and make summers hot, while winters are cold with snow on most years. Wikipedia describes the rainfall as heavy by French standards, with winter nights colder than in any other French lowland area, and temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius common in summer. The ski season in the surrounding mountains is the main winter draw, and the walking season on the 820 km of marked paths listed by the tourist office runs through the warmer months.
Events include the Détours de Babel music festival in March, the Grenoble Outdoor Short Film Festival in June and the Cabaret Frappé music festival in July, according to Wikipedia. Check the tourist office's agenda for the current programme.
