The resort village itself, at 2,300 metres, where the lift system includes magic carpets, drag lifts, chairlifts, gondolas, funitels and a cable car. The resort faces south while many of its slopes face north and north-west. The Cime Caron cable car reaches a 3,200-metre viewpoint with a view of Mont Blanc that pedestrians can use as well as skiers.

A ski resort in the Belleville valley between Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Val Thorens, centred on the La Croisette area, where shops, bars and restaurants face the piste and the lifts to the wider Trois Vallées network. The resort hosted the men's slalom at the 1992 Winter Olympics, and it is possible to ski in to Val Thorens.
Orelle lies in the Maurienne valley on the other side of the ridge and joined Les Trois Vallées in 1996, adding what is sometimes called a fourth valley. A long gondola rises from the village to the Plan Bouchet ski area, from which the Val Thorens station can be reached. Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne railway station has a shuttle service to the gondola.
The traditional village lower down the Belleville valley, part of the same commune as Val Thorens since the 2016 merger that created Les Belleville. Les Menuires lies between it and Val Thorens.
Val Thorens has no airport. International airports close to the ski area include Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, Geneva and Chambéry-Savoie, and Grenoble Isère Airport also has seasonal flights. The nearest railway station to the resort is at Moûtiers, about 35 km away, where direct high-speed trains connect during the ski season with Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the rest of France. From Moûtiers there are bus connections to Val Thorens.
Val Thorens can only be reached by road. It is possible to ski in from Les Menuires, Méribel and Orelle, although the high lifts needed often close in poor weather.
In Les Menuires, the main resort is centred on La Croisette, where restaurants, shops and bars are linked by an internal gallery that fronts the piste. The Belleville valley bases of Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and the Maurienne village of Orelle are other places within the same ski area.
In summer the resort offers mountain biking, walking, hiking, paragliding, microlight flying, fishing and quad biking.
The resort is usually open from mid-November until early May, and at 2,300 metres it is described as the highest Alpine ski resort in Europe.
