Davao City is the largest city on Mindanao, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit the way many people use it: as a base for work assignments, family visits and trips out to Samal Island or the slopes of Mount Apo. A kitchen and a separate living area make a real difference for stays of a week or more, and the city's malls and markets make self-catering straightforward.

Poblacion is the old downtown, close to People's Park on Legazpi Street, a free public park, and the Roxas Avenue night market. It is the historic heart of the city and a practical base for those on a tighter budget who want to be on foot near food and shops.
Stays in or near Poblacion (downtown)
Lanang is one of the city's main commercial districts, north-east of downtown and home to SM Lanang. Lying on the airport side of the city, it is practical for frequent flyers and short business trips.
Bajada, along J.P. Laurel Avenue between downtown and Lanang, is a commercial strip with Abreeza and the Gaisano Mall of Davao. Its central position means short taxi rides in most directions, and it is well served by jeepneys along the main avenue.
Stays in or near Bajada
Matina and neighbouring Ecoland, south-west of downtown, sit away from the busiest central streets, and Ecoland is one of the city's commercial areas. They suit longer stays where everyday services matter more than sights, and the road south leads towards Toril and Eden Nature Park.
Stays in or near Matina and Ecoland
Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) is the city's gateway. Metered taxis are the simplest way into the city, and jeepneys also run into town. The Grab app is widely used.
Jeepneys are the backbone of local transport, supplemented by taxis, whose drivers have a reputation as among the most honest in the country. A large modern bus network, the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project, is under construction; the national transport department expects partial operations from early 2028. Samal Island is reached by ferry, and a road bridge to the island is being built but is not due for completion before 2028.
Everyday shopping is easy: big malls such as SM Lanang, Abreeza and Gaisano Mall of Davao gather shops, food and services under one roof. Living near a main avenue keeps you on jeepney routes, while Grab fills the gaps late at night.
For excursions, the Philippine Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park are popular day trips, and Mount Apo, the country's highest mountain, is a dormant volcano climbed by keen hikers. If you are relocating for work, our relocation guide has a checklist.
Davao has a tropical rainforest climate with little seasonal variation in temperature and no true dry season, so rain is possible in any month. Cyclones are rare compared with much of the Philippines, which makes the city a dependable year-round destination.
The big event is the Kadayawan Festival in August, a thanksgiving for nature, harvest and culture that showcases the city's 11 indigenous tribes, with the Indak-Indak street-dance competition and the Kadayawan Village at Magsaysay Park. Book early for that period.
By land area it is the largest city in the Philippines, with more than 1.8 million residents recorded in 2024, but most visitors stay in a compact belt between downtown and the Lanang business district. For other options in the country see our Philippines hub.
