Where to stay in Warsaw

Śródmieście

  • first-time visitors
  • business travel
  • transport links

The central district around the Palace of Culture and Science is Warsaw's commercial heart, with Warszawa Centralna station, both metro lines meeting at Świętokrzyska and trams in every direction. Hala Koszyki, a restored 1909 Art Nouveau market hall, is now a busy food hall with restaurants and bars. It is the most convenient base for short stays.

Old Town and Royal Route

  • sightseeing
  • couples
  • history

The Old Town, carefully rebuilt after the Second World War and on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980, centres on the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column. The Royal Route runs south from Castle Square along Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat, eventually reaching Wilanów Palace. Expect cobbled streets and evening crowds in summer; Ratusz Arsenał on metro line M1 is the nearest station.

Wola

  • business travel

  • modern apartments

Once industrial, Wola is now Warsaw's main financial district, with office and residential towers including Varso Tower, the tallest building in the European Union. The Warsaw Rising Museum is here too. Metro line M2 at Rondo Daszyńskiego links it directly with the centre and the east bank.

Praga

  • local life

On the east bank of the Vistula, Praga came through the Second World War largely intact, so it still has pre-war streets and buildings. Former factories now house galleries, bars and venues such as the Koneser centre and the Neon Museum. Metro line M2 stops at Dworzec Wileński, and Warszawa Wschodnia, the city's second-largest station, is nearby.

Getting around Warsaw

From Warsaw Chopin Airport, trains leave from the underground station: SKM lines S2 and S3 and Koleje Mazowieckie's RL line call at central stations including Warszawa Śródmieście, Centralna and Wschodnia, taking about 30 minutes to the centre; a standard ZTM time-based ticket is valid on SKM trains. City bus 175 also runs from the airport to the centre. Modlin Airport, about 40 km north, takes noticeably longer to reach.

Public transport is run by ZTM, and one ticket is valid across buses, trams, the metro and SKM trains. Metro line M1 runs north–south and M2 east–west, crossing at Świętokrzyska. Short-term tickets and 24-hour and 72-hour passes are sold from machines and kiosks.

For short hops, the Veturilo bike-share system has stations across the city, and the central districts are pleasant to walk.

Living in Warsaw for longer

Plan grocery runs around Poland's restrictions on Sunday trading: on most Sundays supermarkets and shopping centres are closed, while restaurants, filling-station shops, bakeries and some small convenience stores stay open. Hala Koszyki and other market halls are good for a meal out.

With around a quarter of the city covered by parks, including Łazienki, there is plenty of green space for daily walks and runs. For a longer stay, multi-day ZTM passes are simpler than single tickets, and personalised 30- and 90-day tickets are loaded onto the Warszawska Karta Miejska (Warsaw City Card). Moving here for work? Our guide to serviced apartments for relocation has practical advice, and trains run to Kraków if you want a weekend away.

When to visit Warsaw

Warsaw has a humid continental climate with cold, sometimes snowy, cloudy winters and warm, often stormy summers. January averages around −1.5°C and July about 20°C. Late spring to early autumn is the most pleasant time to visit.

In summer, open-air Chopin concerts are held on Sundays in Łazienki Park, and in the second half of September the Warsaw Autumn festival of contemporary music takes place. Book early if your dates coincide with major conferences.

The city is easy to get around, with two metro lines, a dense tram network and fast trains from Chopin Airport. If you are unsure how these stays differ from hotels, read aparthotel vs hotel.
