Zakopane lies 800–1,100 m up at the foot of the Tatra Mountains and is known as the winter capital of Poland, a centre of Goral highland culture and a base for skiing and hiking. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Zakopane suit the way people use the town: a kitchen and space to dry boots and ski gear make a week in the mountains far more comfortable, and families and groups can share one base for a whole season of trips into the Tatra National Park.

Krupówki is the main pedestrian street, lined with shops, restaurants and stalls selling oscypek, the smoked sheep's cheese of the region. The railway station is about 500 m east of the centre, and the minibuses to the mountains leave from nearby, so this is the most practical base without a car.
Stays in or near Krupówki and the town centre
North of the centre, the town is overlooked by Gubałówka hill, reached by a funicular railway that opened in 1938. It has ski runs in winter and gives views of the Tatras.
On the southern edge of town, Kuźnice is the lower station of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car, which climbs in two sections via Myślenickie Turnie to just below the 1,987 m summit, one of Poland's main ski areas. It can be reached on foot or by local bus.
A village west of Zakopane, close to the Slovak border, Kościelisko is quieter than the town and lies near the Kościeliska Valley, a popular hiking destination. It suits visitors with a car or those happy to use the local minibuses.
East of Zakopane, near the Slovak border, Bukowina Tatrzańska has several historic wooden guesthouses built in the Zakopane Style. It suits a quieter, self-drive stay.
From Kraków, frequent buses run by several carriers take about two hours, departing roughly hourly. Trains run every couple of hours and take between two and three and a half hours. By car, the route follows national road 7 to Rabka and then road 47, about 90 minutes in light traffic but often longer at weekends.
Zakopane itself is easy to walk around. Scheduled PKS buses and privately run minibuses, many leaving from outside the railway station, serve the trailheads in the Tatras. The lake of Morskie Oko is reached on foot in about two hours from the nearest road open to motor traffic.
Oscypek is the local speciality: the genuine smoked cheese is made from sheep's milk and looks like a double pyramid, while imitations are usually more cylindrical. Krupówki is lively but busy; for a calmer stay, look at the streets around Gubałówka or the villages of Kościelisko and Bukowina Tatrzańska.
Book well ahead for peak periods such as Christmas and New Year, and allow extra time on the road from Kraków on fine weekends and holidays, when traffic is heavier.
Zakopane has a cool mountain climate. Winters average around −3°C and bring plentiful snow, especially higher up, which supports the ski season, while summer averages about 16°C, the main season for hiking.
The International Festival of Highland Folklore, held in August on Górna Rówień Krupowa, brings folk groups from around the world for about ten days of competitive concerts, craft workshops and a folk art fair. Zakopane has also hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships three times, and the Wielka Krokiew ski jump dates from 1925.
