Where to stay in Ayia Napa

Town centre and Monastery Square

  • nightlife
  • young travellers
  • walkability

The medieval Ayia Napa Monastery stands at the heart of town, and the square around it is the focus of the resort's nightlife, which rarely gets going before 11pm. Staying here puts restaurants, bars and the bus stops within a short walk, but expect late-night noise in summer.

Nissi Beach and Landa

  • beach
  • young travellers
  • water sports

About 4 km west of the centre, Nissi Beach is one of the resort's best-known beaches, with a small islet you can walk out to at low tide. Landa Beach, with sand dunes and rock pools, lies just to the west.

Makronissos

  • quiet stays
  • beach

At the western end of the resort, Makronissos has calm, shallow water that suits families, and it is at times less busy than Nissi. The ancient Makronissos tombs are close by.

Harbour and Grecian Bay

  • couples
  • boat trips

South-east of the centre, the harbour is the starting point for coastal cruises around the area. Grecian Bay has fine white sand and water that stays shallow a long way out. Limanaki is the beach most accessible from the town centre, and Pantachou, at 1.2 km, is the longest beach strip in the region.

Cape Greco and Konnos Bay

  • nature
  • couples
  • hiking

East of town, Cape Greco National Forest Park has sea caves, forested trails and routes for hiking and cycling. Konnos Bay lies between Protaras, Cape Greco and Ayia Napa, and OSEA buses 101 and 102 pass the area.

Getting around Ayia Napa

Larnaca International Airport is the nearest airport, about 45 minutes away by taxi. Regular bus services run between Larnaca and Ayia Napa: Intercity Buses and OSEA both connect the resort with the main cities, and OSEA route 711 runs from Larnaka via Xylofagou and Ormideia to Ayia Napa and on to Protaras and Paralimni.

The town itself is walkable. OSEA, the Famagusta district bus company, runs routes 101 and 102 between Ayia Napa, Cape Greco, Konnos, Protaras, Pernera and Paralimni, while circular routes 201 and 202 loop around town; route 201 serves Nissi, Landa and Makronissos beaches, the waterpark and the marina. You can pay the driver in cash, and day and multi-day passes are available. Bicycles and mopeds are widely available to hire, and the resort has bicycle lanes.

Living in Ayia Napa for longer

For stays of a week or more, OSEA's multi-day passes, which run up to 30 days, are simpler than buying single tickets, and the route to Protaras and Paralimni makes it easy to vary your beaches and evenings. The Ayia Napa Sculpture Park and the Museum of Underwater Sculptures, opened in 2021 off Pernera Beach, are worth a visit on days away from the beach.

Ayia Napa is busiest in summer, when the nightlife scene is in full swing. If you want a calmer stay, choose Makronissos or the harbour side of town rather than the streets around the main square, or look at other Cyprus destinations.

When to visit Ayia Napa

Cyprus has hot, dry summers and mild winters. At Paralimni, a few kilometres from Ayia Napa, average highs reach about 33°C in July and August and about 16°C in January and February. Most rain falls between November and March, and the sea around Cyprus ranges from about 17°C in February to 27–28°C in August, so swimming is comfortable from late spring to autumn.

Summer is peak season for both beaches and nightlife. The Ayia Napa International Festival usually takes place over the last weekend of September, and the International Youth Soccer Festival brings teams from many countries in April.

The resort sits on the south-east coast, with 14 Blue Flag beaches, more than any other Cypriot resort, and the sea caves and trails of Cape Greco on its doorstep. Neighbouring Protaras is quieter and linked by frequent buses, and Larnaka is the nearest city and airport.
