Kato Paphos is built around the medieval port, with Paphos Castle at the west end of the harbour and the Paphos Archaeological Park, with its Roman mosaics and Odeon, beside it. East of the harbour, Poseidonos Avenue is the main road through the Kato Paphos tourist area, heading along the coast towards Geroskipou. The Blue Flag Municipal Baths beach, with wooden decking, sandy sections and calm water, lies just off it about 300 metres from the castle, with restaurants, cafés, bars and shops around it.

The road north from the harbour leads to the Tombs of the Kings, a rock-cut necropolis about 2 km north of the port that is part of the UNESCO listing; some of its tombs have Doric columns. The area sits between the lower town and the sea, away from the busiest part of the harbour, with Ktima a short ride uphill.

Ktima is the main residential district and the commercial centre, with the municipal market, Kennedy Square and the Byzantine Museum. Apostolou Pavlou Avenue, the town's busiest road, links Kennedy Square with Kato Paphos, and Karavella, the main bus station for intercity and many local routes, is here too.

Getting around Paphos City

Paphos International Airport, near Timi about 10 km south-east of the city, is the second-largest airport in Cyprus. Two year-round airport bus lines run by Pafos Buses (OSYPA) link it with the town: 612 to the Tombs of the Kings bus station via Kato Paphos and the harbour, and 613 to Karavella station in Ktima. Limassol is about 50 km to the east along the A6, and Intercity Buses connect Paphos with the other towns in the south of the island.

The town itself is small enough to walk, and the coastal path between the harbour and the hotel areas is a pleasant way to get about. Local buses cover the rest; Pafos Buses sells daily, weekly and monthly passes and Motion smart cards, and its online journey planner shows live times. Hiring a car is common for exploring the hill villages and the Akamas Peninsula.

Living in Paphos City for longer

Supermarket chains including Papantoniou and Lidl have branches in Paphos, and the municipal market is in Ktima. Neighbouring Geroskipou is known for its loukoumi (Turkish delight), which has protected geographical indication there. Shops range from furniture stores on the road to Polis to small independent shops by the harbour.

Kato Paphos is the most convenient base without a car, as the harbour bus station and the 612 airport route are close by; Ktima, where the 613 ends, suits those who prefer everyday local life over the resort strip. If you are weighing up the options, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out the differences, and Limassol is an easy trip along the coast.

When to visit Paphos City

Paphos has a hot, dry climate bordering on Mediterranean, with the mildest temperatures in Cyprus. Rain falls mainly from November to mid-March and almost never in summer, when average highs reach about 31°C in August and Saharan heatwaves are fairly common. Late June to early September is hot and humid, while the rest of the year is mild, with cooler spells in January and February.

Spring and autumn suit sightseeing at the archaeological sites and walks on the Akamas Peninsula. The Pafos Aphrodite Festival stages an open-air opera in the square in front of the castle at the harbour at the end of August or in early September.

The town has two halves: Ktima, the old upper town and commercial centre on the hill, and Kato Paphos, the lower town around the medieval harbour, where most hotels, restaurants and the archaeological sites are. This page covers the town itself; see Paphos for the wider district and Cyprus for the rest of the island.
