Protaras is a resort in the municipality of Paralimni, on the south-east coast of Cyprus in the Famagusta District, with about 20,000 residents. Wikipedia describes it as quieter than Ayia Napa, with less of a club scene and a reputation for families and domestic Cypriot tourism. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Protaras suit that pattern: families get a kitchen and space for long beach days, and divers or couples staying a week or two can settle in rather than live out of a suitcase.

Fig Tree Bay is the best-known beach in Protaras and takes its name from a single fig tree said to have stood there since the 17th century. The Cyprus tourism portal describes fine golden sand and clear water, with toilets, changing rooms, sun beds and water sports facilities. It is a Blue Flag beach with lifeguards from April to October.

The Church of Profitis Elias stands on a hill above the resort, and Wikivoyage notes that it offers panoramic views. Wikipedia also calls Protaras the land of windmills, so the hill is a good place to look for them.

Longer stays in Protaras work best near Fig Tree Bay, where beaches, restaurants and services are close together, or in Paralimni, where local life revolves around the town rather than the resort.
