Aix-en-Provence is a university city in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, about 30 km north of Marseille according to Wikipedia. It is a city where aparthotels and serviced apartments make good sense: visitors tend to stay several nights to take in the fountains, markets and Cézanne sites, students and visiting academics need weeks or months rather than nights, and a kitchen and a separate living area help families and groups who want to shop in the markets rather than eat out every evening.

Wikipedia describes the Cours Mirabeau as a wide thoroughfare planted with double rows of plane trees, bordered by fine houses and decorated with fountains. Wikivoyage says the city is highly walkable, with the centre crossed in about 15 minutes on foot, and lists markets on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. This is the best base for visitors who want everything on foot.

Wikivoyage adds that an express coach links Marseille Saint-Charles station with Aix in 30 to 40 minutes.
