Wikipedia says Zicatela Beach hosts major surfing competitions and is nicknamed the Mexican Pipeline for its powerful wave, and that the beach is about four kilometres long and separated from the other beaches by a rocky outcrop called El Morro. Wikivoyage lists restaurants and small groceries along the Punta Zicatela strip. It is the natural base for surfers and for visitors who want a beach-front routine with cafes close by.

Wikipedia says the tourist centre is not a plaza but Pérez Gasga Avenue, known as El Adoquín, lined with bars, hotels, cafes, restaurants, craft shops and tour operators, and that it runs parallel to the main beach. Playa Principal is 500 metres long, and Wikipedia says it is the main place to hire boats for trips and deep-sea fishing. It suits visitors who want shops and restaurants on the doorstep.
Wikipedia describes Playa Carrizalillo as a 300-metre-wide beach on a small bay, reached by a footpath on a rock stairway, with normally gentle waves and few restaurants. It says the walk from town takes about fifteen minutes. Wikivoyage calls Carrizalillo the most scenic and safest beach for swimming. Rinconada, nearby, is the neighbourhood where a small airport once stood, according to Wikipedia.
Wikipedia describes Playa Bacocho as the westernmost beach, with upscale beach clubs, fine soft sand and palm trees, and says it faces south-west and offers good sunset views. It adds that the far west part of the beach can have a strong rip current. It suits visitors who want a quieter, more resort-style stay away from the surf strip.
Wikipedia says Puerto Escondido International Airport handles national and international traffic for the city and the Costa Region of Oaxaca, and that it offers passenger services to seven domestic destinations. Wikivoyage says the airport is very close to town, and lists colectivos as a way into town. Wikipedia also says a new terminal is under construction beside the existing one, so facilities may change.
By road, Wikivoyage says a new high-speed highway opened between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido in early 2024, cutting travel times to about three hours, and that ADO buses run from Oaxaca. Wikipedia says that before the new highway opened, buses from Oaxaca took seven hours over hairpin bends. Within town, Wikivoyage says frequent local buses, called urbanos, ply the main roads, and shared taxis called colectivos run along fixed routes through the crucero, the main junction in El Centro.
For a longer stay, the Wikivoyage listings name Chedraui as the largest grocery store in town, with a pharmacy, and small mini-supers in the Zicatela neighbourhood. It also lists the Benito Juárez market in the town centre for fresh fish, produce and kitchenware. Wikipedia says most cuisine is based on seafood and local plants, so cooking at home with market ingredients is easy to combine with eating out.
Wikivoyage says the new highway has brought a sharp rise in visitors, with the Semana Santa holidays overwhelming the town's infrastructure, so book early if your stay falls around then. It also describes a party scene and a French expatriate community. Wikipedia says the Universidad del Mar has a campus in town. For practical planning, see the long-stay accommodation checklist.
Wikipedia describes a tropical and humid climate, with an average annual temperature of 28 °C and a rainy season in the summer. It says mid to late summer is low season for tourists but a prime time for waves and international tournaments. Wikivoyage says the scenery is green year-round, unlike drier areas such as Mazunte and Huatulco, where the forest loses most of its leaves in the dry season.
Wikivoyage says olive ridley turtles come ashore to lay eggs at Playa Escobilla, between Puerto Escondido and Mazunte, from July to September. Check the current schedules of local operators if you want to see them, and be aware that the Semana Santa holidays are very busy according to Wikivoyage.
Wikipedia says the town centre is on the north side of the bay and that Puerto Escondido is mostly located in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec. Wikipedia says the coast there runs east to west, with Zicatela at the eastern end, so choosing the right beach neighbourhood matters. If you are combining the coast with the state capital, see Oaxaca City or browse the wider Mexico hub.
