Getting around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) lies on the main coastal highway north of the Hotel Zone, with direct flights from many US and Canadian cities and from Mexico City and Guadalajara. Southbound city buses marked 'Centro' stop under the pedestrian bridge outside the terminal and reach the Zona Romántica in about 20–30 minutes. Authorised airport taxis are sold at a kiosk in the arrivals hall, while city taxis wait by the bridge and Uber picks up on the far side of the main road; walk briskly past the timeshare sellers on the way out of customs.

City buses are frequent, as often as every five minutes, and are flagged down at stops; destinations are shown on the windscreen, and routes appear on Moovit and Google Maps rather than in an official timetable. Buses marked 'Centro' follow the main road through the marina and Hotel Zone, while 'Túnel' buses bypass downtown to reach the Zona Romántica. Intercity coaches to Guadalajara, Mexico City and Mazatlán use the central bus station, reached by northbound buses from the airport, and orange-and-white buses run south to Mismaloya and Boca de Tomatlán from the Zona Romántica.

Living in Puerto Vallarta for longer

For everyday shopping, the Mercado Municipal Río Cuale covers crafts and souvenirs and Isla Cuale has souvenir stalls, while for groceries there is a large supermarket near the marina. Bus journeys are paid in cash to the driver, with no transfers, so keep small change and the ticket you are given in case an inspector boards. English is widely spoken.

When to visit Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a tropical wet and dry climate, warm all year. Winters are dry, and December to May is the best season for the beaches; humpback whales are in the bay from December to March. The rainy season runs from mid-June to mid-October, with most rain between July and September falling in short, heavy storms, and sea turtles nest on the beaches from May to October.

The Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe fills the streets from 1 to 12 December. The Flower and Garden Festival at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is held in the last week of February, the May Festival marks the municipality's anniversary at the end of May, the city's Pride festival also takes place in May, and the long-running Festival Gourmet International brings fine-dining events to the city in November.

The city stretches north from the old streets of the Zona Romántica to the marina by the airport. Beyond the Ameca river, the Nayarit coast continues to Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerías and Sayulita, all reachable by regional bus.
