Playa del Carmen, the second-largest city in Quintana Roo, grew from a ferry port for Cozumel into the main town of the Riviera Maya, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit the way people use it. Many visitors stay for weeks, mixing beach time with cenotes, Mayan sites and island trips, and a kitchen, a separate living space and laundry facilities make that much easier than a single hotel room, especially for families and remote workers.

Downtown revolves around Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), a pedestrian street lined with shops, clubs and restaurants running parallel to the beach. The Cozumel ferry pier is at its southern end, and both ADO bus terminals are close by.
Stays in or near Centro and Quinta Avenida
A gated community south of downtown, with a golf course, private residences, holiday rentals and resort hotels along the beach. It is calmer than the centre yet within walking distance of the ferry pier and the southern end of Quinta Avenida.
Stays in or near Playacar
North of the busiest stretch, Quinta Avenida continues towards Coco Beach, a quieter beach that is a bit of a walk from the liveliest part of town. The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival is staged on the beach at 28th Street, on the way north, on the last weekend of November.
Stays in or near North Playa (Coco Beach)
The second-largest community in the municipality, about 20 km south down Highway 307, with residential areas west of the highway and resorts on the coast. It is a base for golf, sportfishing, diving and nearby cenotes, linked to Playa by colectivo.
Most visitors arrive at Cancún International Airport, from where ADO buses run directly to Playa del Carmen in about 50 minutes. Tulum International Airport is about two hours away, and the Tren Maya has a Playa del Carmen station about 6 km from downtown, with trains north to Cancún Airport and south to Tulum; since August 2026 Tren Maya Conecta buses have linked the station with downtown and Playacar, and taxis are the alternative.
Colectivos, shared vans, run along Highway 307 to Cancún and Tulum every few minutes from early morning until late evening. Passenger ferries cross to Cozumel, about 20 km offshore, in roughly 30 minutes. Downtown and Playacar are walkable, and taxis cover longer trips.
Large supermarkets, including Walmart, Chedraui and Mega, make self-catering straightforward, and there are plenty of bank ATMs around the centre. Choose an apartment a few blocks back from Quinta Avenida if you want quieter nights while staying within walking distance of the beach and shops.
Plan for the season: the wet season from June to November coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, and seaweed (sargassum) can wash up on the beaches at certain times of year, so check recent conditions before booking a long stay.
Playa del Carmen has a tropical savanna climate, warm all year, with winter lows around 18°C and summer highs near 33°C. Most rain falls between June and November, the same months as the Atlantic hurricane season, so December to May is the driest period.
The Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, a free open-air event on the beach by 28th Street that draws around 20,000 people, takes place on the last weekend of November.
The town is laid out on a simple grid of numbered streets and avenues, so it is easy to find your way around on foot. For other bases on the coast, compare Tulum and Cancún, or browse the Mexico hub.
