Bucerías is a small beach town on the Riviera Nayarit, on the Bay of Banderas, and it works well for people who want a base for a week or a winter rather than a single night. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Bucerías suit that pattern: a kitchen makes the town's markets and restaurants optional rather than essential, a separate living area gives families space after a beach day, and longer stays are easier than in a standard hotel room. Our guide explains what an aparthotel is if the format is new to you.

Wikipedia notes that the half of Bucerías north of Federal Highway 200 mostly consists of local residents, and that the town has a main square, a church and a wide choice of restaurants. Staying near the square puts everyday services on foot. It suits visitors who want a lived-in Mexican town rather than a resort enclave.

Wikipedia says the part of town south of Highway 200 towards the sea is home mainly to foreign residents, both permanent and part-time, and that buildings rarely exceed seven floors. It also describes an uninterrupted white sand beach continuing north and south for more than 29 kilometres. Choose this side if the beach is the point of the trip.

Wikipedia describes La Cruz de Huanacaxtle as a fishing village on the Bay of Banderas, and the Riviera Nayarit tourism board names it as the home of the Riviera Nayarit Marina. It is the next town along from Bucerías and gives a smaller, harbour-side alternative.
Wikipedia describes Nuevo Nayarit, formerly Nuevo Vallarta, as a resort community with canals lined with tropical gardens and a long beach. It lies on the other side of Bucerías from La Cruz and is closer to Puerto Vallarta's airport. See our Nuevo Vallarta page for that area on its own.
The Riviera Nayarit tourism board lists Punta de Mita among its main destinations and describes it as exclusive and luxury tranquility. It lies further along the Bay of Banderas coast from Bucerías and works as a day trip or as a more secluded base.
The nearest major airport is Puerto Vallarta (PVR), which Wikivoyage calls the largest regional option, with frequent flights to Mexican airports and to several US cities. From the Puerto Vallarta side, Wikivoyage explains that local buses leave from the Walmart stop and that you should look for the bus marked Punta Mita to reach Bucerías, or Nuevo Vallarta for that resort.
Federal Highway 200 runs through the town and divides it, so the main practical question is which side of the road your apartment is on. Wikipedia says that the Arroyo del Indio, a seasonal stream bed, crosses the town. The central streets are cobbled and the main square and church sit in the town proper, so many errands can be done on foot from an apartment nearby.
Wikipedia says that Canadians began coming to Bucerías for extended stays in the 1980s and remain a very large part of the seasonal population, which is why services for long visits are well established. The same article says that seasonal influxes double the town's population. A kitchen helps here, as it lets you mix cooking in with the town's many restaurants.
Wikipedia says buildings in Bucerías rarely exceed seven floors and that the units are condominiums rather than hotel style, which is why apartment-style stays are the natural fit here. It also mentions a large street bazaar for traditional regional art and textiles each January around the patron festival of Our Lady of Peace, one of the livelier times to be in the centre.
Wikivoyage says the best time of year to travel to Nayarit is January to May, the dry season. Humpback whales can be seen in the Bay of Banderas between December and March according to the Riviera Nayarit tourism board, while Wikivoyage suggests January to March for a whale-watching trip.
Because the town fills with seasonal residents in the cooler months, those are also the busiest. If you want a quieter town and are comfortable with a less predictable season, shoulder months outside the dry season are worth considering. Check a current weather forecast before you book.
Wikipedia describes Bucerías as a typical town of the region, with cobblestone streets, a main square, a church and many services for visiting foreigners, plus a wide array of restaurants. It sits between La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Nuevo Nayarit, so it also makes a practical middle point for exploring the northern shore of the bay. The wider region is covered on our Mexico page.
