Getting around Sopot

Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is about 10 km from Sopot, according to Wikipedia. Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway (PKM) trains connect the airport with Gdańsk Wrzeszcz and Gdynia Główna, where you change for the SKM, and buses link the airport with Sopot Kamienny Potok station as well as Gdańsk centre and Wrzeszcz.

The SKM suburban rail line runs through the Tricity with trains every 6 to 30 minutes on the central Gdańsk to Gdynia section, depending on the time of day. Sopot has three stations: Sopot Wyścigi in the south, Sopot (Główny) in the middle and Sopot Kamienny Potok in the north. Wikivoyage says Sopot has no public transport of its own, but is served by bus lines from Gdańsk and trolleybuses from Gdynia, and that the walk from the railway station to the pier takes about 20 minutes.

Living in Sopot for longer

Sopot is compact and walkable: Wikivoyage puts the railway station about 20 minutes on foot from the pier and beach, and the town is little more than 4 km across. Wikivoyage notes that the town retains a small-town feel while taking advantage of the big-city infrastructure of Gdańsk and Gdynia, so longer stays usually mix quiet days in Sopot with trips along the coast by train.

Park Północny, the Northern Park, offers walking paths, cycling routes and roller-skating, according to Wikivoyage. Wikipedia says Sopot has been a spa since the 16th century, and the Balneotherapy Centre and the Spa House are among its landmarks. If you are visiting for work in Gdańsk or Gdynia, serviced apartments for relocation are worth considering.

When to visit Sopot

The Baltic coast has a cool climate. Climates to Travel gives July and August as the warmest months, with daytime highs around 22 degrees Celsius and the sea at its warmest in August, at an average of about 18 degrees. The same source says the best time to visit Gdańsk, and so the nearby Tricity, runs from mid-May to mid-September.

July is also the wettest month in Gdańsk, so bring layers. The Sopot International Song Festival, held at the Forest Opera since 1964, is one of the town's best-known events.

The town is only a little over 4 km across, so most places are within walking distance of the sea. See the Poland hub, Gdańsk for the historic port city next door, and our guide to aparthotels compared with hotels if you are choosing between formats.
