Dhahran

  • shopping

North-west of Khobar, Dhahran is home to Saudi Aramco and to Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, which opened in 2016 with a museum, a library, a cinema and a 900-seat theatre. The Mall of Dhahran, one of the biggest shopping centres in the Eastern Province, is about 15 minutes from central Khobar.

Getting around Al Khobar

King Fahd International Airport, around 50 km away and roughly 45 minutes' drive north-west of central Khobar, serves the whole Dammam area. Taxis, ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem, and SAPTCO buses connect it with the city. The King Fahd Causeway, about 25 km long, links Khobar with Bahrain, whose international airport some travellers use instead; check the causeway's current status before planning a crossing.

Khobar is car-dependent, and taxis can be scarce away from the centre, so most visitors rely on ride-hailing apps. SAPTCO runs the Eastern Region public bus network across Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and Qatif, with 212 stops and services from 5:30am to 11:30pm every day; a mobile app helps with routes and tickets.

Living in Al Khobar for longer

Large malls cover most needs: Al Rashid Mall in Al Thuqbah and the Mall of Dhahran, which has a Carrefour hypermarket, are the biggest. For spices, perfume and tailoring, the shops along King Khalid Street are worth a visit.

Plan your days around the heat: from May to September, outdoor activity is best kept to early mornings and evenings, when the Corniche fills with walkers. If you are moving to the Eastern Province for work, our guide to serviced apartments for relocation covers what to ask before a long stay.

When to visit Al Khobar

Khobar has a desert climate with very hot summers and mild, dry winters. Summer daytime temperatures commonly run from the high 30s to over 45°C, with high humidity on the coast, while January, the coolest month, ranges from about 12°C to 22°C. December to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with March–April and October–November as pleasant shoulder seasons.

The cooler months are also when the city hosts its biggest outdoor programmes: the first Khobar Season ran from late October 2025 to the end of January 2026, with events along the Corniche. The southern suburbs face Half Moon Bay, with several beaches.
