Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's second-largest city, a Red Sea port with centuries of trade behind it, a major commercial centre and the main gateway for pilgrims travelling on to Mecca and Medina. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Jeddah suit the mix of people who pass through: families on pilgrimage who want to cook and stay together, business travellers on longer assignments, and visitors who want space to retreat from the heat between trips to the old town or the waterfront.

Jeddah's UNESCO-listed old town, a warren of souqs and the multi-storey coral houses the city is famous for, with old gates marking the line of the vanished city wall. Souq al-Alawi is the main market street, and major restoration is under way. Medina Road begins on its northern side.
A central seafront district on the southern Corniche, near King Fahd's Fountain, the world's tallest, and the Al-Rahmah Mosque. The redeveloped waterfront has gardens, restaurants, fountains and an aquarium, and the area is a short drive from both al-Balad and the Tahlia shopping strip.
Stays in or near Al Hamra and the southern Corniche
Tahlia Street is lined with shopping centres and restaurants, with the Al-Andalus Mall nearby. It is a practical base for work in the centre, and its malls and food courts make everyday errands simple.
The northern stretch of the waterfront, near the Corniche street circuit that hosts the Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Red Sea Mall, one of the city's largest, is on King Abdulaziz Road nearby, and the airport is a short drive further north.
The northern edge of the city, with a marina, private beach clubs and resort compounds. Boat trips on the Red Sea leave from the marina, and the dive sites offshore are known for visibility of 30–40 m and largely untouched coral.
King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) lies about 19 km north of Jeddah. Taxis run to the city; agree the fare before you set off, or use Uber. The airport has its own station on the Haramain High Speed Railway, which links Jeddah with Mecca and Medina via King Abdullah Economic City; the main city station is at Al-Sulimaniyah. Not every train calls at both Jeddah stations, so check before you board.
Jeddah has no metro, and most people get around by car. Green taxis and Uber are plentiful, city buses are timetabled on Google Maps, and road signs are in Arabic and English. Al-Balad is best explored on foot, and the Corniche is the place to walk in the evening.
Large shopping centres such as Mall of Arabia, Red Sea Mall and the malls along Tahlia Street are where most everyday shopping happens; big supermarkets also sell local maps. If you plan to drive, car hire is widely available.
For weekends, the private beach clubs north of the city are more relaxed than the public beaches. The Red Sea is at its coolest in January and February, so divers will want a wetsuit in winter. Demand peaks during Hajj and Ramadan, so book early if your dates overlap. Travelling on? See Madinah, Riyadh and our other cities in Saudi Arabia.
Jeddah has a hot, arid climate and stays warm in winter, typically around 15°C at dawn and 28°C in the afternoon. Summers often top 40°C and are humid, particularly in September, and the sea is at its warmest from August to October. January and February are the most comfortable months. What little rain falls usually comes in November and December, sometimes as heavy thunderstorms.
The Red Sea International Film Festival takes place in al-Balad in early December, and the Formula One Grand Prix is held on the Corniche circuit in spring; the next race is scheduled for March 2027. Hajj season brings large numbers of pilgrims through the city.
The city sprawls along the coast, tied together by the Corniche, a seaside road nearly 30 km long. The historic core of al-Balad lies at the southern end of modern Jeddah, the main shopping streets run inland through the middle, and beach clubs and resort compounds stretch north towards Obhur.
