Dammam is the capital of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and an administrative centre for the country's oil industry, and much of its visitor traffic is business travel, project work and relocation. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Dammam suit those longer, working stays: a kitchen, separate living space and laundry facilities make weeks on assignment far easier than a hotel room, and they give families room to settle while they look for something permanent.

Where to stay in Dammam

Corniche and Ash Shati

  • waterfront
  • families
  • long stays

Dammam's corniche is a waterfront facing the Gulf with a walking track of almost 4 km, best visited from November to April. Ash Shati, the district along the northern seafront, has the AlShate'a Mall and is close to Marjan Island, a small artificial island with a monument.

Central Dammam (Al Adamah)

  • budget stays
  • transport links
  • local life

The older commercial heart of the city, with everyday shops and local restaurants. The intercity bus station is on 11th Street, a short distance north of the centre, and Dammam's railway station has trains to Riyadh and Hofuf.

Dhahran

  • business travel
  • culture
  • shopping

Dhahran grew up around Saudi Aramco, which has had its headquarters here for about 90 years, and is also home to King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. It has the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), with a museum, library, theatre and cinema, and the Mall of Dhahran, one of the largest shopping centres in the province.

Al Khobar

  • expatriates
  • waterfront
  • dining

Khobar is the residential and commercial core of the metro area, with a corniche of about 16 km. It is about 15 minutes' drive from Dammam and closest to the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, which makes it a common base for people who travel back and forth.

Getting around Dammam

King Fahd International Airport, the largest airport in the world by land area, lies in the desert north-west of the city. SAPTCO runs a roughly hourly airport shuttle bus to the bus station that takes about 45 minutes, and taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Careem are the quicker option.

Most residents drive, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are the usual way to get around. The Eastern Region Bus network, run by SAPTCO, links Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran and Qatif with 85 buses and 212 stops, operating daily from 5.30am to 11.30pm; a dedicated app shows routes. Saudi Arabia Railways trains run from Dammam to Hofuf in about 1 hour 10 minutes and to Riyadh in about 3.5 hours, and Bahrain is reached by road across the King Fahd Causeway.

Living in Dammam for longer

Because distances across the metro area are large and the heat is intense for half the year, choose an apartment close to where you will work or study and budget for regular taxis or a hire car. The corniches in Dammam and Khobar are the main places for evening walks and outdoor exercise once temperatures drop.

For shopping, the big malls (AlShate'a Mall and Marina Mall in Dammam, the Mall of Dhahran and al-Rashid Mall in Khobar) combine supermarkets, food courts and chain stores under one roof. For a change of scene at weekends, Al Hofuf and the al-Ahsa oasis are reachable by train.

When to visit Dammam

The most comfortable time to visit is from November to April, when the corniche, outdoor dining and day trips are pleasant. Summer suits business visits that are spent mostly indoors, but plan for air-conditioned transport door to door.
