Madinah (Medina) is Islam's second holiest city, and most visitors come to pray at the Prophet's Mosque, often after the Hajj or as part of an Umrah journey. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Madinah suit families and groups travelling together, who value separate bedrooms, a refrigerator and a kitchen for preparing their own meals; many pilgrim lodgings around the mosque are already set up this way.

Most hotels and serviced apartments stand within a few hundred metres of the Prophet's Mosque, which is now open around the clock. The surrounding streets are lined with shops selling prayer rugs, dates and other goods, and there is a street of food stalls north of the King Fahd gate. Al-Baqi' cemetery is beside the mosque.
South of the centre, Quba Mosque is considered either the oldest or second-oldest mosque in the world. Qiba Road links it with the Prophet's Mosque, and a shuttle of small open carts runs along it, so staying here keeps both mosques within easy reach.

North of the city, the plain below Mount Uhud was the site of the Battle of Uhud and holds the burial ground of its 70 martyrs, including the Prophet's uncle Hamza. It lies a little outside the central area, so a car, taxi or bus is the easiest way to reach it.
West of the centre, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, marks where the direction of prayer was changed from Jerusalem to the Kaaba. It is outside the central area, so a taxi or bus is the easiest way to get there.

Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport handles domestic flights and regional routes across the Middle East and is busiest during the Hajj. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and public bus route 400 connect it with the city. The Haramain High Speed Railway runs from Madinah station, on the eastern side of the city, to Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport and Makkah at up to 300 km/h; Makkah is around two to two and a half hours away.
SAPTCO runs the Madinah Bus network: five main routes run from 6am to 10pm daily, and the Madinah Bus app holds a digital card for fares. Taxis are plentiful, but agree a fare before setting off, using a ride-hailing app price as a guide. Careem rents bicycles and scooters through its app.
Many larger shops, chains and convenience stores accept cards and Apple Pay, but smaller businesses often take cash only, so keep some to hand. Restaurants serve food from across the Muslim world, including Indian, Pakistani, Indonesian, Turkish and Egyptian cuisine, and Saudi chains such as Al Baik are easy to find.
Dates are the classic local purchase, alongside prayer rugs and other goods sold in the streets around the mosque, and large shopping complexes and malls cover everyday needs. For cheap meals, the food stalls north of the King Fahd gate serve dishes from Indonesia, India, Pakistan and the Middle East.
Madinah has a hot desert climate. Summer days average around 43°C, with temperatures above 45°C not unusual between June and September, while winter days are around 25°C and nights can drop to 8°C. What little rain there is falls between November and May.
The cooler months from November to March are the most comfortable for walking between sites. The city is busiest around the Hajj season, when many pilgrims visit Madinah before or after the Hajj, so book early for those weeks.
Accommodation is concentrated in the central area around the mosque, and rates generally fall the further you are from it. Madinah is linked by high-speed train to Jeddah and Makkah; for other destinations see the Saudi Arabia hub.
