30 stays · 20 aparthotels and 10 serviced apartments · from €112/night

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is a compact, low-rise city laid out on a grid and ringed by parklands, with the Adelaide Hills to the east and Gulf St Vincent to the west. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Adelaide make sense for the way people use the city: as a base for day trips to the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Hills, for weeks-long work postings, and for festival season, when a kitchen and the Adelaide Central Market on the doorstep are a real advantage.

Getting around Adelaide

Adelaide Airport has a single terminal for domestic and international flights, about 6 km from the centre. Adelaide Metro's JetBus services leave from one stop outside the terminal for the city, Glenelg and several shopping centres; the city route runs every 15 minutes during the day and takes about 25 minutes at peak times. You can tap on with a contactless bank card, and taxis wait outside the terminal.

Adelaide Metro runs the city's trains, trams and buses on one ticketing system, with tap-and-pay, the rechargeable metroCARD or QR tickets in an app. Trams link the Entertainment Centre, the city, the Botanic Gardens and Glenelg, and travel within the city centre is free on trams and the City Connector buses. Suburban trains radiate from Adelaide Railway Station, and the O-Bahn guided busway serves the north-eastern suburbs. Interstate and regional coaches use the Central Bus Station on Franklin Street, and long-distance trains run to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Alice Springs and Darwin.

Living in Adelaide for longer

The Adelaide Central Market covers fresh produce, delis and cheese, and a Coles supermarket and Chinatown are close by. Buses thin out sharply after 7pm and most services stop around midnight, so choose a base on a tram line or a Go Zone route if you will be out late. For trips to the wine regions, a hire car or a tour is the most practical option.

When to visit Adelaide

Adelaide is Australia's driest capital. Summers are hot and dry, with average highs around 27–29°C and several heatwaves above 40°C most years, while winters (June to August) are mild and wetter, with highs of 15–16°C and June the wettest month. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, and spring brings flowers after the winter rains.

The cycling Tour Down Under opens the year in January (16–24 January in 2027). From mid-February to late March, 'Mad March' brings the Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide Festival (26 February–14 March in 2027) and Writers' Week, so book early for that period.

Distances are short: the airport is only 6 km from the centre, trams run to the beach at Glenelg, and the inner suburbs are a short bus ride away. For a wider trip, compare it with Melbourne, about a day's drive or a short flight east, or browse more stays across Australia.
