Perth is a spread-out, low-density city where many visitors stay a week or more, whether for work in an economy closely tied to mining, visiting family or touring Western Australia. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Perth suit that pattern: a kitchen, a laundry and separate living space make longer stays easier, and families get room to unwind after hot days at the beach.

Perth's historic port is now a food and entertainment destination, with plenty of pubs and clubs. It is the end of the Fremantle train line from the city, and Rottnest Island, a nature reserve off the coast where locals go to relax and see quokkas, makes an easy day trip.

Cottesloe

Cottesloe Beach, with its heritage pavilion, is one of Perth's best-known beaches and the easiest to reach by public transport, from Cottesloe station on the Fremantle line. Swim between the flags, as the beaches face the open ocean.

Getting around Perth

Perth Airport has two precincts. Since October 2022 the Transperth Airport line has served terminals 1 and 2 from Airport Central station, with trains every 12 minutes at peak times and every 15 minutes otherwise; terminals 3 and 4 are about 1 km from Redcliffe station, linked by a shuttle bus. A free bus also links the two precincts.

Transperth runs trains, buses and ferries. Eight suburban rail lines all pass through Perth station, running from about 5am to midnight, with trains every 5–10 minutes at peak times. Pay by tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard or a SmartRider card, and tag on and off every time. Travel within the CBD Free Transit Zone is free, as are the Central Area Transit (CAT) buses. Perth is low-density, so expect to spend a fair amount of time travelling between sights.

Living in Perth for longer

For a stay of several weeks, a registered SmartRider card with Autoload earns a discount on fares, and Transperth also offers DayRider and FamilyRider tickets. Trackwork sometimes replaces trains with buses at weekends, so check before travelling.

Shops and public transport keep running on most public holidays, but most shops and restaurants close on Good Friday, Anzac Day (25 April) and Christmas Day. Summer sun is fierce, so pack sunscreen, and buy hay fever remedies from a chemist if you come for the spring wildflowers.

When to visit Perth

Perth has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, when daytime highs average around 30°C and can pass 40°C, and mild, wet winters with days around 18–19°C. On summer afternoons the sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor cools the coast.

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the most pleasant times to visit, and in October and November wildflowers bloom in Kings Park. The Fringe World festival fills Northbridge and the city with more than 600 shows from late January to mid-February.

The free public transport zone in the city centre makes the CBD a convenient base, while Fremantle and the coastal suburbs trade convenience for sea breezes. Compare other Australian cities such as Melbourne and Sydney, or explore the Australia hub.
