Port Douglas is a small town of a few thousand people on the coast north of Cairns, and a base for two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, which is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Port Douglas suit the way people holiday here: a kitchen for breakfasts before early reef departures, a laundry for salty swimwear and room for families who stay a week or more.

Macrossan Street is the main street, lined with shops, cafés and restaurants and easy to explore on foot. The weekly Sunday market at Rex Smeal Park, with tropical fruit, vegetables and crafts is held in town.

Running south from the town, Four Mile Beach has firm sand that is good for walking and cycling. Stinger nets and lifeguards are at the northern end, closest to the town centre, which is the best place to base yourself if swimming is a priority.

About 6 km south of the town on the Captain Cook Highway, Craiglie is a small coastal locality surrounded by sugarcane. It is quieter than Port Douglas itself and suits visitors with a car who want more space.
About a 20-minute drive north-west of Port Douglas, Mossman is a working sugar town and the administrative centre of the Shire of Douglas, with a hospital, schools and everyday services. Mossman Gorge, in Daintree National Park, lies just west of town.
Cairns Airport is about an hour's drive south along the Captain Cook Highway, a coastal road that links Cairns, Port Douglas and Mossman. Shuttle buses run daily, and you can also take a private transfer or a hire car from the airport; book transfers ahead from June to October, the busiest months. Uber is not guaranteed for the long run north, so pre-booking is safer.
The town centre is easy to walk, and bikes, scooters, taxis and Uber cover short hops. To drive north into the Daintree beyond Mossman you need to cross the Daintree River on the Daintree Ferry; Cape Tribulation is about 90 minutes from town.
For longer stays, a hire car makes a big difference: it opens up Mossman Gorge, the Daintree and the Atherton Tablelands, and Mossman has more everyday services than the resort town. The Sunday market is good for tropical fruit and vegetables, and tap water is safe to drink throughout the region.
Stinger season runs from November to May, and the netted area at the northern end of Four Mile Beach is patrolled by lifeguards. Saltwater crocodiles live in the area, and signs on Four Mile Beach warn against walking near the water's edge, especially at dusk, so creeks and estuaries are best left alone.
Port Douglas has a tropical monsoon climate. The dry season, from June to the end of October, brings warm sunny days around 25–26°C and cool mornings and evenings; it is also the busiest time. The wet or green season runs from November to May, with highs rarely above 31°C and the heaviest rain from January to March, when the rainforest and waterfalls are at their fullest.
Peak periods are December–January, Easter and June–October, while February to May (outside school holidays) and November are quieter. The town's main festival, Port Douglas Carnivale, runs for ten days over two weekends in May.
