The Gold Coast is a city of about 720,000 people strung along more than 50 km of council-maintained ocean beaches in south-east Queensland, with theme parks behind the dunes and rainforest in the hinterland. Apartment living is part of the landscape here — high-rise towers line the shore — so aparthotels and serviced apartments on the Gold Coast are a natural fit for families who want separate bedrooms and a kitchen, groups sharing a holiday, and longer winter escapes in the mild, dry season.

The tourist hub of the coast, where high-rise apartments line kilometres of surf beach and Cavill Mall fills with bars, clubs and late shopping. It is busy day and night, with G:link tram stops along the strip and frequent buses south along the beaches. See our dedicated Surfers Paradise page for properties right on the strip.
Stays in or near Surfers Paradise
Directly south of Surfers Paradise, with a patrolled surf beach, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, a casino complex and Pacific Fair, the coast's largest shopping centre. The Oasis centre has a large supermarket, and G:link stations run the length of the suburb.
Stays in or near Broadbeach
An upscale suburb just north of Surfers Paradise, known for its long beach and the Sea World resort. Main Beach tram station sits on its southern fringe, and Hopo ferries link G:link stations with the Marina Mirage and Sea World wharves.
Stays in or near Main Beach
The Gold Coast's central business district, much calmer than Surfers Paradise. The Broadwater Parklands have a calm-water swimming enclosure and a pool, and the tram runs north to Gold Coast University Hospital and Helensvale station for trains to Brisbane.
Stays in or near Southport
A southern district built around a headland national park with rainforest walks and lookouts over the cove, and a beach that suits both surfers and families. The G:link extension to Burleigh Heads opened in 2026, putting it on the tram line to Surfers Paradise.
Stays in or near Burleigh Heads
The southern end of the Gold Coast, twinned with Tweed Heads across the New South Wales border, close to the airport. The surf breaks at Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay are famous, and the state line runs through town, which matters for clocks in summer when NSW uses daylight saving and Queensland does not.
Stays in or near Coolangatta
Gold Coast Airport (OOL), often called Coolangatta Airport, is about 30 minutes' drive from Surfers Paradise and closes overnight. Bus 777 runs every 15 minutes to the G:link tram at Burleigh Heads, and door-to-door shuttles, taxis, Uber and Didi are alternatives. Brisbane Airport has more international flights; from there, the Airtrain and Queensland Rail trains run to Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang and Robina, or it is about 80 minutes by car — handy if you are combining the coast with Brisbane.
G:link trams run from Helensvale via Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads, every 15 minutes or better and around the clock at weekends; Surfside buses cover the rest. All Translink services take contactless Visa and Mastercard or a go card. The 36 km Oceanway path for walking and cycling follows most of the coastline.
Tap on and off with a contactless card or go card; a flat fare applies on all Translink buses, trains, trams and ferries, which makes daily commuting simple. Large supermarkets are found in the main shopping centres, such as Oasis in Broadbeach and Pacific Fair.
Avoid driving in peak hours (about 07:00–08:30 and 15:30–17:00), particularly on the Gold Coast Highway through Surfers Paradise and the Pacific Motorway between Nerang and Palm Beach. Free street parking is usually a few blocks back from the busiest streets. For a change from the beach, the hinterland's national parks, such as Lamington and Springbrook, are best reached by car. Heading south across the border? Our Byron Bay page covers the next stretch of coast.
The Gold Coast has a mild subtropical climate suitable for year-round visits. Winter (June to August) is fairly dry with average highs around 21°C. Summer highs average just under 30°C, with humid nights and frequent short, intense afternoon storms rather than days of steady rain.
The Gold Coast Marathon is held in early July and Blues on Broadbeach in May. School-leavers flock to the Gold Coast for Schoolies week in late November and early December, so pick a quieter suburb then if you want calm. Theme parks are at their busiest in peak holiday periods.
Each stretch of coast has its own character. Surfers Paradise is the busy centre of tourist life, Broadbeach is a little more polished, Main Beach is upmarket and close to the Broadwater, and the southern beaches from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta are quieter and more residential. The G:link tram ties the northern half together.

Surfers Paradise for nightlife and a central base, Broadbeach for families and dining, and Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta for a quieter, surf-focused stay.
Take bus 777 to Burleigh Heads and change to the G:link tram, or use a shuttle, taxi or rideshare; the drive takes about 30 minutes.
Gold Coast Airport is far closer but mostly domestic, with some flights from New Zealand and Asia. Brisbane has more international routes but is about 80 minutes by car or a train and tram journey away.
Not along the coast between Helensvale and Burleigh Heads, where trams and buses run frequently. A car helps for the hinterland and some theme parks.
Any time of year. Winter is dry and mild, and summer is hot and humid with afternoon storms.
