Getting around Maroochydore

Sunshine Coast Airport is at Marcoola, about 10 km north of Maroochydore, with direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and several Queensland destinations, plus services to Auckland. Car hire companies are in the arrivals hall, and door-to-door transfer shuttles can be pre-booked. Translink buses link the airport area with Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore, though some services stop on David Low Way rather than at the terminal. Many visitors also fly into Brisbane Airport, about 100 km to the south, and coaches run from Sunshine Plaza to Brisbane Airport.

From Brisbane the drive usually takes about an hour, mostly on motorways. By rail, Queensland Rail's North Coast line runs to Nambour, Woombye and Landsborough, from where connecting buses reach Maroochydore. Sunshine Plaza, the region's largest shopping centre, has hundreds of retail stores, restaurants and cinemas under one roof, and the Sunday Cotton Tree Markets add local produce, crafts and live music. The council's public library is in Cotton Tree, which is handy for a quiet place to work or borrow books during a longer stay.

The Sunshine Coast is a chain of separate towns rather than a single city, so a hire car is worth considering if you plan trips to the hinterland or the Glass House Mountains, which Wikivoyage places about 30 minutes south-west of Maroochydore.
