When to visit Darwin

Darwin has a tropical savanna climate with two seasons. The dry months are the most comfortable for being outdoors.

The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets run through the dry season. If you are travelling in the wet season, expect storms and plan flexible days.

Darwin is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, on a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. The 2021 census recorded 139,902 residents, about 63 per cent of the territory's population, and the suburbs extend north towards Lee Point and east towards Palmerston, a satellite city about 20 km away. Because attractions are scattered, where you stay matters more than in a typical compact city centre.
