Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Hobart work well for a city that is compact enough to walk but often visited for several days at a time, whether for Tasmania's food, museums and markets or as a base for exploring the island. A kitchen lets you cook with produce from the weekend market, and a separate living area is welcome when the weather turns cool and changeable.

Wikivoyage says walking suits the compact downtown, and the Hobart Bus Mall in the centre is where Metro Tasmania buses connect, including to North Hobart. The airport says SkyBus has six stops in central Hobart, including Brooke Street Pier on Franklin Wharf and the Tasmania Travel and Information Centre on Elizabeth Street. It is the simplest base if you are arriving without a car.

Salamanca Place consists of rows of sandstone buildings, formerly warehouses for the port, now restaurants, galleries, craft shops and offices. Salamanca Market runs there every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm. Kelly's Steps lead from the Place up to the streets of Battery Point, so the two districts work as a single walking area.

Battery Point sits on a point of land jutting into the Derwent and was settled in the early 1800s. Tasmania's official tourism site describes winding streets, colonial architecture and historic character, with Hampden Road as the main street and Arthur Circus a ring of early cottages. It is mostly residential, so expect a quieter evening than in the CBD.

North Hobart is a suburb directly adjacent to the CBD, known for the Elizabeth Street restaurant strip between Tasma and Federal Streets, where Asian food dominates. It is also home to the State Cinema, Tasmania's largest independent cinema, and North Hobart Oval. Metro Tasmania's route 540 connects it to the Hobart Bus Mall.
Stays in or near North Hobart
Hobart International Airport is about 15 km north-east of the city, according to Wikivoyage. The airport website lists SkyBus services that run seven days a week to the city, taxis meeting every arrival, Uber from the pick-up lane and several car hire companies. The airport says the average SkyBus trip takes 30 minutes, with six stops in central Hobart.
In the centre, walking is practical. Metro Tasmania runs bus services in Hobart, with trip planning tools, real-time tracking through the Metro Tas app and ticketing via the My Greencard portal. Wikivoyage also lists Derwent Ferries between Brooke Street Pier and Bellerive, a ferry from Brooke Street Pier to the Museum of Old and New Art, and car hire for trips beyond the city.
Salamanca Market on Saturdays is the main weekly food and produce outing, and the Elizabeth Street strip in North Hobart gives a concentration of restaurants for evenings. Staying in or near the CBD or Battery Point means most things are within walking distance, while North Hobart has a direct bus route to the Bus Mall.
For a longer move, the guide to serviced apartments for relocation has practical advice. Wikivoyage recommends layers all year, including a jumper in summer, so pack for changeable weather even in a long stay.
Hobart has a cool oceanic climate. Wikipedia gives a summer mean maximum of 22.7 degrees Celsius, a winter mean minimum of 5.2 degrees and about 565 mm of rain a year. Summer days are long, with 15.3 hours of daylight on the summer solstice, though sunshine averages only 5.9 hours a day across the year.
Wikipedia describes Dark Mofo as a winter festival held in June, and the Taste of Summer food festival (previously the Taste of Tasmania) runs from late December to early January at Princes Wharf. Wikivoyage says the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, held from Boxing Day, finishes at Constitution Dock. Battery Point's Princes Park overlooks the race finish line, according to Tasmania's official tourism site.
Hobart is Tasmania's capital and the southernmost state capital in Australia, on the estuary of the River Derwent beneath kunanyi/Mount Wellington. The metropolitan area had about 254,930 residents in 2024. The downtown is compact and the historic districts are close together, which makes the choice of base more about atmosphere than distance.
