Margaret River is a town in the South West of Western Australia, 277 km south of Perth and about 9 km inland from the Indian Ocean, in the heart of one of the country's best-known wine regions. Aparthotels and serviced apartments suit the area because most stays are built around a group, a family or a few relaxed days between cellar doors, beaches and caves, where a kitchen for local produce, a laundry and room to spread out are worth having.

A residential suburb on the south-eastern side of town, with its own primary school. It is a short drive from the main street and suits stays where a quieter street and family-sized accommodation matter more than being on the doorstep of the cafes.
Prevelly lies at the mouth of the Margaret River, where Margarets Main Break, also called Surfers Point, is the focus of most significant surfing competitions. Wikipedia counts some 75 breaks along 130 km of coastline.
South of town, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park holds several hundred caves, six of them open to the public. Mammoth Cave, 21 km south of the town, has fossils more than 35,000 years old and has been open to visitors since 1904.
Wikivoyage describes the drive from Perth as around three hours, heading south on Highway 1 and the Kwinana Freeway. The same guide lists a daily coach service run by South West Coaches between Perth and Margaret River and says the train reaches Bunbury, with a Transwa bus continuing from there. For flights, Tourism Western Australia names Busselton as the main airport, around a 45-minute drive from Margaret River town.
Once you are there, Wikivoyage says the town suits walking and cycling, but a vehicle helps for the wineries and the coast. Wikipedia notes a bypass called Perimeter Road to take traffic, including heavy vehicles, around the east of the town.
The town has all the basics, and Tourism Western Australia notes Saturday farmers' markets alongside main-street produce providores. Food and drink producers in and around the town include a dairy, a brewery, coffee roasteries and a chocolate factory, according to Wikivoyage, so self-catering is easy to combine with local products.
The wine region around the town is made up mostly of boutique producers. Wikipedia says it covers about 100 km from north to south and about 27 km at its widest, bounded by the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge and the ocean, and Tourism Western Australia counts more than 200 vineyards. A kitchen and a car are the practical combination for visiting cellar doors on different days.
Margaret River has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with around 1,130 mm of rain a year, most of it between May and August. Summers are warm and frequently sunny, with sea breezes, according to Wikipedia. Humpback whales pass the coast northbound from May to August and southbound from September to early December, according to Tourism Western Australia, which also lists wildflowers from August to November.
The CinefestOZ film festival stages events across the region in August, according to Wikipedia. The wine region attracts an estimated 500,000 visitors annually, so it pays to book early for popular periods.
