Shuttle bookings are made directly with the individual operator. Wikipedia describes the airport as 7 km north of Cairns City, between the CBD and the Northern Beaches, so Trinity Beach lies further along the same northward route.

Kinetic Cairns runs the local buses. Route 110 goes from Palm Cove to Cairns Central and route 111 from Kewarra Beach to Cairns Central, and Wikipedia's Kinetic Cairns article lists routes 110 to 113 for the Northern Beaches, running to Cairns Central or Smithfield. The Northern Beaches article also says cars are very common because buses in the region are infrequent. Each beach suburb sits at the end of a spur road leading off the Captain Cook Highway, which is the main road to the city.

Living in Trinity Beach for longer

For a longer stay, Smithfield is the place for a big shop: Smithfield Shopping Centre, on the Captain Cook Highway, has a post office inside. Trinity Beach itself has a state primary school and a community hall, which gives day-to-day life the feel of a local neighbourhood.

If you are working or studying, James Cook University's Cairns campus in Smithfield is a landmark for the area, and Cairns Central is the city-end stop for routes 110, 111 and 113. Buses run from the beaches to the city, though the infrequent service means a car is often useful. For moves of several weeks or months, see our guide to serviced apartments for relocation.

When to visit Trinity Beach

Cairns has a tropical climate. Wikipedia describes a wet season with heavy monsoonal downpours from November to May and a relatively dry season from June to October, with mean annual rainfall close to 2,000 mm. Daily maximum temperatures average roughly 26.2 C in July and 31.7 C in January. Tropical cyclones usually form between November and May, and the region saw flooding during Cyclone Jasper in December 2023.

Wikivoyage describes the winter months of June to August as the more comfortable time to visit compared with the hotter, stickier summer. It also advises against swimming off the beaches between October and May except inside the netted stinger enclosures, so the cooler, drier months are the easier time for beach days.

The suburb covers about 8.6 sq km and has a beach of roughly a mile, bounded by the Coral Sea, with Kewarra Beach to the north-west and Smithfield to the south. It is a residential neighbourhood first and a holiday spot second, which gives a slower pace than the city itself.
