San Cassiano

Getting around Colfosco

The usual rail gateway is Brunico (Bruneck), from where the line 460 bus runs up the valley through Pedraces, La Villa and Corvara to Colfosco. The South Tyrol public transport timetable for line 460 lists stops at Corvara bus station, La Villa and Pedraces on the way to Brunico, so check the current timetable for times. A local guide to the valley names Bolzano, Innsbruck, Venice and Verona as the main airports, giving about an hour from Bolzano and about an hour and 45 minutes from Innsbruck.

On the mountain, Alta Badia is linked to Dolomiti Superski, and the Sella Ronda circuit goes around the Sella massif by lift in either direction, crossing the Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena passes. In summer the same trails can be ridden by mountain bike.

Living in Colfosco for longer

Colfosco itself is small, so a longer stay here is mostly about the mountains: walking, cycling, skiing and the Ladin culture that the tourist board highlights, including handicrafts and local cooking. A kitchen is useful because the villages are spread along the valley, and bus journeys to Corvara or La Villa are a short step if you want a wider choice.

If you are working remotely or staying several weeks, compare the villages by bus access along line 460 rather than distance alone, and check which village suits your daily routine. The aparthotel versus hotel guide covers what changes with a longer stay.

When to visit Colfosco

Alta Badia is a winter resort as well as a summer one. Wikipedia lists around 130 km of skiable terrain served by 51 lifts, with the Gran Risa giant slalom run a regular December stop on the World Cup circuit. The tourist board lists the Audi FIS Ski World Cup among its winter events.

In summer the same lifts serve hiking, mountain biking, road cycling and via ferrata routes. Lift dates change each year, so check the lift operators and the tourist board before you book.

The village sits in Alta Badia, one of the valleys linked into Dolomiti Superski and the Sella Ronda circuit. Below are the villages worth comparing, how the bus from Brunico works, and when the area is open for skiing and walking.
