Aparthotels and serviced apartments are a good fit for Merano, a South Tyrol spa town set among mountains and valleys that suit walking. A kitchen lets you shop at the town's markets and cook a few meals, and the extra room helps families or couples sharing a base for hillside walks. If you are weighing the formats, see aparthotel vs hotel.

The Laubengasse (Via Portici) arcades are the old commercial heart. The tourist office says they were built around 1200, with the lower arcades running about 400 metres from Pfarrplatz to Kornplatz. Wikipedia lists the medieval gates, the Gothic St Nicholas' Church and the Princely Castle among the landmarks here, so most sights are reachable on foot.

Along the river the tourist office lists the Passer Promenade, the sunny and sheltered Winter Promenade, the Gilf Promenade and the Summer Promenade, all suitable for strolling. Wikipedia places the Kurhaus, the Stadttheater and the Empress Elisabeth Park among the 19th-century spa-era buildings, and notes the arched Wandelhalle promenades beside the river.

Wikivoyage says the nearest airport is at Bolzano, and that you reach Merano by train from Bolzano, by bus (SASA and SAD operate the line) or by car on the MeBo expressway from the A22 motorway exit at Bolzano South. The Merano tourist office describes bus, train and cable car routes as a well-developed network, and points to the suedtirolmobil app for connections across South Tyrol.
Within town, Wikivoyage says the best way to see Merano is on foot, supported by city buses run by SASA and a chair lift up to the village of Tirol, which it says runs between April and November. Check the tourist office page on public transport before you travel for where to buy bus tickets. Wikivoyage also says the town has a good bike trail network, and that finding parking in the centre can be complicated.
Longer stays are well served by the town's markets and arcades; the tourist office lists the Merano Market among its markets. Wikipedia says vineyards extend into the city and there are extensive orchards, so local fruit and wine are easy to find. The tourist office keeps a list of walking routes, and the Tappeinerweg trail runs above the city for views over the valley.
The town is a base for a wide area: Wikipedia notes Trauttmansdorff Castle and Tirol Castle just outside, and Wikivoyage names Merano 2000 among nearby ski areas for winter. If you are moving for several weeks for work, see serviced apartments for relocation.
Wikipedia classes the climate as oceanic but close to humid subtropical, with a July mean just under 22 degrees Celsius. Using data from the Merano/Gratsch weather station, it says August is the wettest month at 96 mm and February the driest at 25 mm. Wikivoyage says holiday-makers visit throughout the year.
The tourist office says the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle reopen in spring and that the Merano Flower Festival is the spring highlight. The Merano Grape Festival is held in October and the Merano WineFestival in November at the Kurhaus, while the Christmas Market runs from late November to early January. Wikipedia lists the Merano WineFestival, MeranOJazz and the Christmas market among the city's annual events.
Wikipedia describes Merano (Meran in German) as the second-largest city in South Tyrol after Bolzano, sitting in a basin at the entrance to the Passeier Valley and the Vinschgau, with a mild Alpine climate that made it a spa town in the 19th century. Wikivoyage adds that mountains to the north, east and west shelter it, while the valley opens south. For the villages in the hills above, see Schenna, Tirolo and Lagundo.
