In the province of Lecce, caffè leccese, a cold coffee served in a glass with ice and almond milk, is drunk in bars and restaurants. Wine from nearby Manduria and the Salento area includes Primitivo di Manduria and Negroamaro. The municipal website publishes a calendar of cultural, tourist and sporting events.
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, humid and dry summers and mild, windy winters, with most rain falling in autumn and winter. The surrounding seas moderate Salento's summer heat, although temperatures can occasionally reach 40 degrees Celsius.
Salento is prone to windy weather year round.
The coast has capes, islets and reefs, and the sandy sea floor stays shallow for tens of metres out, with clear water.
