Siracusa, or Syracuse, is a good place to choose aparthotels or serviced apartments. Most visitors split their time between the archaeological sites, the old island of Ortigia and the coast, which tends to mean four or five nights rather than one. A kitchen is especially useful here because the outdoor market in Ortigia sells fish, vegetables and fruit, as Wikivoyage describes it, and cooking with what you buy is half the pleasure.

Ortigia is the historic island core, according to Wikivoyage, and Wikipedia describes the brackish water of the Fountain of Arethusa here, with its papyrus. Wikivoyage names the Cathedral, built as a Greek temple of Athena in the 5th century BC, and the Castello Maniace fortress at the southern tip. Wikivoyage also says the whole island is a limited traffic zone, with most vehicles prohibited at night and on Sundays and holidays.
Stays in or near Ortigia
Neapolis is on the mainland, north of the station, and Wikivoyage calls it the archaeological area, 20 minutes' walk from the station. Wikipedia describes the Neapolis Archaeological Park, which covers 240,000 m², and places the Paolo Orsi Regional Archaeological Museum and Villa Landolina in the Neapolis district. It suits visitors whose priority is the ancient sites, and who are happy to take a bus or short drive to Ortigia.
Wikipedia lists Acradina (Akradina) among the nine former administrative districts of Syracuse, between the Temenite Hill and the Cappuccini Quarry crag, and says it holds about a fifth of the urban population. It is a mainland neighbourhood north of Ortigia, and suits stays where you want a more everyday area while staying within reach of Ortigia.
Plemmirio is the headland south of Ortigia, which Wikivoyage places about 10 km south of the centre, with a protected marine area on it. Wikipedia describes the Plemmirio marine protected area as an observatory for cetaceans. It is a sensible option if the coast matters more than sightseeing, and you are happy to travel into the city for the sites and the market.
Wikivoyage gives the distance to Catania-Fontanarossa airport as 50 km north of Syracuse, and says intercity buses between Catania and Syracuse all call at the airport, taking just over an hour. It lists direct trains along the coast from Messina eight times a day, five train connections a day from Palermo via Enna and Catania, and intercity buses run by Interbus and AST from the hub next to the railway station. Services change, so use the operators' timetables when you plan a connection.
Within Siracusa, Wikivoyage describes small electric shuttle buses, run by Siracusa d'Amare, on three lines through the centre, with the Neapolis lines running from the terminal at Molo Sant'Antonio. Wikivoyage says the two areas of interest, Ortigia and Neapolis, are each a 20-minute walk from the station.
For a stay of a week or more, Ortigia gives you the best of the daily routine on foot: Wikivoyage describes the outdoor market there as a place for the freshest fish, vegetables and fruit. For bigger shopping, the large Sunday market at Piazza S. Lucia is on the mainland.

Wikipedia describes the climate as cool with moderate rainfall in winter and extremely hot and dry in summer, with the sirocco wind a regular feature. For walking the archaeological park and Ortigia, spring and autumn are the more comfortable seasons, although summer suits swimming along the coast.
The annual season of classical drama at the Greek Theatre, run by INDA, ran from April to July in 2026, with the first production opening on 8 May, so book well ahead for that period. Wikivoyage describes the Festival of Santa Lucia, the city's patron saint, on 13 December, and Wikipedia records her martyrdom on 13 December 304.
Wikipedia says the city was founded on Ortygia by Corinthians in 733 BC, and that Syracuse was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica. This page explains where visitors stay, how to arrive and move around, what the weather is like and which seasonal events shape the calendar. For background on the format, see what is an aparthotel, or browse Italy and the island's capital, Palermo.
