Antalya is a large working city on the Gulf of Antalya, with an urban population of around one and a half million, backed by the Taurus Mountains, and it suits aparthotels and serviced apartments well. Summers are long and hot, so a separate living area, a fridge and a kitchen make the midday hours easier, and families spending a week or more on the beaches of Konyaaltı or Lara get far more space than in a standard hotel room.
101 stays
The walled historic core, with narrow Ottoman-era lanes, restored wooden houses and the old harbour below the cliffs. Hadrian's Gate, the 2nd-century Roman arch, is the traditional way in, and the heritage tram line runs along the outside of the walls towards the Antalya Museum.
Stays in or near Kaleiçi (Old Town)
A long pebble beach running south-west from the city centre, lined with a seafront park and residential blocks. It is less given over to package tourism than Lara, has several farmers' markets nearby, and the Antalya Museum sits at its city-centre end.
Stays in or near Konyaaltı
Şirinyalı is the busiest and closest part of the Lara strip east of the centre, though it has less beach than the sandy coast further east. It is a residential district with cafés and shops, close to the large TerraCity shopping centre.
Stays in or near Lara (Şirinyalı)
Further east along the Lara coast, Kundu-Aksu is the main package-holiday and resort zone, with sandy beaches and a quieter, less urban feel. The airport is close by, and a taxi is the easiest way to reach the resort strip.
The modern centre around Atatürk and Cumhuriyet streets just north of Kaleiçi, with offices, the MarkAntalya shopping centre and the main tram stops at İsmetpaşa. It is the most convenient base for getting around by tram and bus without a car.
Stays in or near Muratpaşa centre
Antalya Airport, the third-busiest airport in Turkey, lies about 13 km north-east of the centre. The AntRay tram runs from the airport through the city centre to the intercity bus terminal (Otogar) and Fatih, reaching downtown İsmetpaşa in about 50 minutes, with trams roughly every 15 minutes from early morning to midnight. City bus 600 also runs to the Otogar, and bus 800 serves the Lara resort strip; the Antalyakart app shows live departures for both buses and trams.
Inside the city, the AntRay network has three lines, including a heritage tram using vintage cars that runs from the Museum past the Old Town. The reloadable AntalyaKart gives discounted fares and allows transfers; contactless bank cards are also accepted. Kaleiçi and the modern centre are walkable, while Konyaaltı and Lara are best reached by tram, bus or taxi.
For everyday shopping, the big malls such as MarkAntalya, 5M Migros on Atatürk Boulevard and TerraCity towards Lara have supermarkets and long opening hours, and weekly neighbourhood farmers' markets, particularly around Konyaaltı, are the place for fresh produce.
Pick a base near a tram stop if you will be staying for weeks rather than days, and plan errands for mornings or evenings in summer, when daytime temperatures average 30–35°C and can top 40°C. Air-conditioning matters more here than almost any other feature.
Antalya has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate: June to August are hot, humid and almost rainless, while winter is mild but brings heavy rain, with December and January the wettest months. April to May and October to November are the best months for sightseeing, and the sea stays warm well into autumn.
The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, Turkey's leading cinema event, takes place in early autumn, usually in October.
The city is also busy outside high summer: spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for sightseeing, and the mild winters draw longer-staying visitors. If you are new to the format, our guide to what an aparthotel is explains how these stays work, and the Turkey hub covers the rest of the coast.
