Marmaris sits at the head of a deep, pine-fringed bay on Türkiye's south-west coast, and its population more than doubles in the summer season. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Marmaris suit the way many people use the town: families wanting a kitchen and separate bedrooms for a fortnight by the sea, sailors provisioning for a gulet or yacht charter, and winter visitors staying for weeks in a climate that stays mild when northern Europe turns cold.

The old town climbs the hill below Marmaris Castle, built for Suleiman the Magnificent before his 1522 assault on Rhodes and now an archaeology museum. The harbour and marina are at its foot, and Bar Street, a lane of bars and clubs in the old town, is the main nightlife strip. The covered Grand Bazaar is a short walk inland.

West of downtown, the seafront runs past a long, narrow sandy beach with free public access. This stretch is a short ride from the old town and is linked to the centre and to İçmeler by the dolmuş minibuses that run along the main road.

About 8 km south-west of Marmaris, İçmeler grew from a fishing and sponge-diving village into a resort that is quieter than the town. Its bay is known for water sports including diving, windsurfing and waterskiing, and the pine-covered hills behind it are popular for hiking. Evening entertainment is mostly restaurants and pubs with live music.

Turunç lies in its own bay on the far side of the mountains from İçmeler, reached by a winding road or on the boat trips that circle the bay. Its beach holds Blue Flag status, and it suits travellers who want calm water and a slower pace over nightlife.

The nearest airport is Dalaman, about 100 km to the east. HAVAŞ and MUTTAŞ run shuttle buses between the airport and Marmaris, with the HAVAŞ route ending at Marmaris bus terminal after stops including Köyceğiz; the journey takes around 90 minutes, and buses from the airport are timed to meet incoming domestic flights. The bus terminal (otogar) is on the northern edge of town, about 3 km from the beachfront.
Within the resort, dolmuş minibuses are the main way to get around. They run along the main streets and out to the suburbs and villages, with different coloured bands marking routes within Marmaris and those out to İçmeler. Between April and October, foot-passenger ferries cross to Rhodes in about an hour.
The town centre is the practical base for a longer stay, with the Grand Bazaar on 59 Sokak for everyday shopping and the bus terminal for onward travel. The dolmuş network makes İçmeler and the western seafront easy to live in without a car.
Outdoor activity fills the days: the area has 9 waymarked road-cycling routes and 11 mountain-biking routes through the surrounding forest, and boat trips run out to the bays and to Sedir (Cleopatra) Island from the village of Çamlı. If you are weighing up self-catering against a resort hotel, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out the differences.
Marmaris has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Rain is very unlikely between May and October, and midsummer highs reach the mid-30s°C. Most of the year's rainfall comes between November and March, but winter days are mild, typically between 8°C and 15°C, which makes the town a sensible base for a long winter stay.
Peak season runs through the summer months, when the population more than doubles and beach areas are at their busiest. Late spring and early autumn bring warm sea temperatures with fewer crowds, and the town's annual sailing regatta takes place in late October.
The resort runs continuously along the bay from the castle and marina to İçmeler, so the main choice is between town-centre convenience and a quieter beach base. For a wider trip along this coast, Fethiye and Bodrum are both within reach.
