Aparthotels & serviced apartments in Uzungol

15 stays · 12 aparthotels and 3 serviced apartments

Uzungol is a mountain lake village in the Black Sea region, and aparthotels and serviced apartments suit it because most visits are built around several days of walking, rain and quiet rather than a single night. A kitchen and a living area are useful in a place where the weather can change quickly and where families or groups often prefer to cook some of their own meals and spread out after a day outdoors.

Caykara

  • long stays
  • local services
  • road access

Caykara is the district town, about 19 km from the lake on the road towards Trabzon. It is the practical choice if you want everyday shops and services close at hand and are comfortable travelling up to the lake by road. It also works as a base for exploring the district by car.

Demirkapi and the Haldizen valley

  • hiking
  • plateaus
  • quiet stays

Further up the valley, Demirkapi is the plateau about 12 km beyond Uzungol, reached by a rocky road, and the guide notes that its tourist facilities are only just starting. The Yedigoller, or Seven Lakes, are glacier lakes in the foothills of Demirkapi. It suits hikers who want to be higher in the valley, away from the village.

Getting around Uzungol

Uzungol is about 95 to 99 km from Trabzon, depending on the source, on an asphalt road that runs through Caykara. The nearest large airport is Trabzon Airport, which is in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon, is operated by the State Airports Authority and has been open since 1957. From Trabzon, the lake is reached by road, and the guide mentions a minibus (dolmus) making regular summer runs on the rocky road between Uzungol and the Demirkapi plateau.

In the village itself, distances are small and most of the lakeside is reachable on foot. For the plateaus, the glacier lakes and day trips elsewhere in the district, a hire car or a pre-arranged transfer from Trabzon gives you the most flexibility.

Living in Uzungol for longer

The valley is known for heavy rainfall and is described as one of the greenest areas of Turkey, with fog sometimes settling over the lake in the evening. An apartment with a kitchen and a place to dry clothes makes extended stays far more comfortable than a single room, particularly if you are walking every day.

The local guide describes modern hotels, small pansiyons and bungalows. If you plan to stay for more than a few days, stock up on groceries in Caykara or Trabzon first, then use the village restaurants for evening meals. The guide to what an aparthotel is explains how apartment-style stays differ from a standard room.

When to visit Uzungol

Both the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the local tourism guide give April to October as the best time to visit the nature park. The local guide says a minibus runs regularly in summer on the road up to the Demirkapi plateau.

The local guide mentions skiing in winter, fog that sometimes covers the lake in the evening and heavy rainfall, so pack waterproofs whatever the month. See aparthotel versus hotel if you are comparing stay types for a longer trip.

The lake lies in the Caykara district of Trabzon Province, at an altitude of about 1,090 metres in a valley surrounded by mountains. It formed after a landslide blocked the Haldizen stream and created a natural dam. The surrounding area is protected as Uzungol Nature Park. This page explains where to base yourself, how to reach the lake from Trabzon, and when to visit. For the larger coastal city and its airport, see Trabzon, and for the country as a whole see Turkey.
