Cam Ranh is the long peninsula and deep-water bay in Khánh Hòa province, and it is where Nha Trang's international airport actually sits. Aparthotels and serviced apartments in Cam Ranh suit the way this coast is used: families and groups who want a kitchen, living space and a beach on the doorstep, and travellers who prefer to stay near the airport rather than commute from the city. The area is much more spread out than Nha Trang, so a self-contained apartment-style base makes practical sense.
Bãi Dài is the best-known beach on the bay, about 20 km south of Nha Trang, with soft sand, blue water and seafood served from beachfront shacks. Wikivoyage describes the shore as still being developed. The official national tourism site calls the water shallow and turquoise, which suits families with younger children. It is a stay for beach days rather than for urban sightseeing.
The area around Cam Ranh International Airport is the practical choice for an early flight or a late arrival. The airport lies on the bay and is about 30 km from Nha Trang, and Bãi Dài beach is around 12 km away according to one travel guide. The coastline between the airport and Nha Trang is described by the national tourism site as under development, so the setting is spread out.
Bình Ba is a small island in the bay, described as about 20 km offshore and known for its lobster farming. Visitors tend to treat it as a day or overnight excursion from the mainland rather than a base, with boat trips arranged locally.
Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is the main way in. It was Vietnam's fourth busiest airport in 2019 and the only one in the country handling more international than domestic passengers in 2018. Terminal 1 is used for domestic flights, while Terminal 2, opened on 30 June 2018 and designed after a swallow's nest, handles international flights. From the airport, a taxi to Nha Trang is offered at a fixed rate or by the meter, and airport bus 18, run by Đất Mới, takes around 50 minutes to the city, with stops at major hotels.
Along the peninsula itself, distances are long and public transport is thin. Wikivoyage suggests a motorbike is probably the best way to reach Bãi Dài from Nha Trang, with bus 18 another option, and Wikivoyage notes that some mid-range and upscale hotels in the area organise airport transfers. Nha Trang is roughly 45 km north of parts of the bay, depending on where you are heading, and the drive takes about an hour.
Plan your food shopping around the geography. The big supermarkets that visitors to the area mention, including Lotte Mart and GO!, are in Nha Trang rather than on the Cam Ranh peninsula, so a longer stay at Bãi Dài works best if you stock up on a trip into the city or arrange deliveries. Near the beach, seafood restaurants and shacks cover most meals.
Local specialities are worth building into a stay: bánh căn (mini rice pancakes), sá sùng (sea worm), squid pancakes, Bình Ba lobster and blood cockles from Thủy Triều lagoon all feature in regional food guides. If you are weighing a kitchen against a hotel room for a week or more, our guide to aparthotels versus hotels sets out the differences, and what an aparthotel is explains the format.
Cam Ranh shares the climate of the Nha Trang coast, a tropical savanna pattern with a long dry season from January to August and a shorter wet season from September to December. Annual rainfall is around 1,300 mm, most of it from northeast monsoons, and heavy rain from typhoons is not unusual. Wikivoyage places the monsoon from October to mid-December, when sea winds can be strong and the weather can turn chilly.
Tourism guides to the bay recommend the dry months for swimming and island trips: one names March to August, another January to August. Wikivoyage notes that summer brings many holidaymakers to the coast and hotel rooms get harder to find. The bay itself is sheltered, with waters described as consistently calm because the peninsula almost encircles it.
The name can be confusing. Since a reorganisation of the province's local government in June 2025, Cam Ranh is also the name of a single ward formed from three former wards of Cam Ranh city. Visitors, though, usually mean the whole bay area: the Bãi Dài beach strip, the airport district and the islands in the bay. For the livelier city to the north, see Nha Trang, and for other Vietnamese beach stays try Phan Thiet.

Cam Ranh lies south of Nha Trang on the same coast. The airport is about 30 km from Nha Trang, and Bãi Dài beach is around 20 km south of the city according to Wikivoyage.
Taxis offer a fixed rate or a metered fare, and airport bus 18, operated by Đất Mới, takes around 50 minutes with stops at major hotels. Some mid-range and upscale hotels also organise transfers, according to Wikivoyage.
Bãi Dài suits beach holidays and families, while the airport district is convenient for early or late flights. Nha Trang, to the north, is the better choice if you want a city with more restaurants and sights.
The dry season, from January to August, brings calmer seas and sunnier weather, and guides to the bay recommend it for swimming and island trips. The wet season runs from September to December.
Yes. Terminal 2, which opened in June 2018, is used for international flights, while Terminal 1 handles domestic services. In 2018 the airport handled more international than domestic passengers.
