Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, has grown fast, and many of its new high-rise districts and resort towns are made up of apartments. That makes aparthotels and serviced apartments a natural fit on Phu Quoc, whether you are a family wanting separate rooms and a kitchen for a beach fortnight, or a winter visitor settling in for several weeks of dry-season sunshine.
Duong Dong is the island's administrative centre and largest town, at the mouth of the Duong Dong river. Its night market is the place for seafood, and the free bus network connects the town with the airport and the north.
Running south from Duong Dong down the west coast, Long Beach stretches for around 20 km and faces the sunset. It is the island's main resort strip, close to the airport,. Free buses serve the west coast.

About 5 km north of Duong Dong, Ong Lang Beach is a quieter stretch of west-coast sand known for its sunsets. It suits couples who want a calmer stay within easy reach of town.
The north-west has the large Grand World resort town, with its night market street. Beyond, beaches such as Ganh Dau are more secluded, with Phu Quoc National Park's forest inland. Route 17 of the free bus network links Grand World with the airport and the west coast.

At the southern tip, An Thoi is a fishing town and the base for boat trips to the An Thoi islands and diving. The Sun World cable car runs about 7.9 km over the sea to Hon Thom island and its water park. Sao Beach, on the south-east coast a few kilometres from An Thoi, is a popular beach.
Phu Quoc International Airport lies south of Duong Dong, with flights from mainland Vietnam and international routes, including a one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City. From the terminal, taxis, ride-hailing apps and free electric buses are available; route 17 runs from the airport up the west coast to Grand World. Fast boats and car ferries connect the island with Rach Gia and Ha Tien on the mainland.
The island's free electric buses are tracked with the VinBus app and cover the main corridors. Taxis use meters, according to Wikivoyage, and ride-hailing is available in the main centres. Scooters are widely available for hire.
For longer stays, Duong Dong and the northern end of Long Beach are the most convenient for markets, restaurants and services. The free buses make it possible to live without a car if you stay close to a route.
Pepper farms, traditional fish sauce factories and fishing villages such as Ham Ninh, with floating seafood restaurants, show a different side of island life. If you are planning a long winter stay, our guide to what an aparthotel is explains the options.
Phu Quoc is warm all year, averaging around 27°C. The dry season from November to March is the high season, with sunny skies and daytime highs of about 31°C. April and May are the shoulder season.
From around July to September the monsoon brings regular rain. Beach days and boat trips to the southern islands are best planned for the dry months.
The island is roughly triangular, about 50 km from north to south, with Duong Dong, the main town, on the west coast and An Thoi at the southern tip. More than half of it is protected within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, including Phu Quoc National Park, which covers the forested north. Phu Quoc is known for its fish sauce and black pepper. For the mainland, see Ho Chi Minh City or browse all of Vietnam.
